Red face When music becomes more than a passion

After 3 years having a full time job, I decided to go back to school.

The almost year spent in a wheel chair made me realize how important life was. The average man works more than half of his life and why not spent these 50 years doing something I like.

After a major audition, I was selected to enter at College St-Laurent in Jazz. I had no musical background in school, everything I learned was in a private music school I intended for 2 years.

That being said, I just had the hardest end of semester in my entire life. I've learned a lot and mostly I discovered my weaknesses and could now start to work on them.

Today I had a conversation with my solfege teacher(; I've been struggling to keep up with the material we are learning since late august.) My average is at 60%, so Im able to attend the next class next semester. Well, after a long talk, I asked her to FAIL me.

Many of my friends are questioning my decision....

This year, music became to me more than a passion. I know my weaknesses and I know that I can do better. My foundation in solfege and melodic transcriptions is still really weak and I don't wanna end college struggling every semester and ending my term always border line of not making it.

To me having a good ear and using it smartly is an important part in a musician evolution.
Even If Im adding an extra semester in my progression I think that I did a smart move.

Music is my life, and musicians are my mentors.

Couldn't you just choose to repeat the year? You pay for the classes either way. Choosing to be failed is kind of like choosing to have bad credit.

Take the grade for what it is and repeat the classes if you want to pay to take them again.

Our education is different, when we finish highschool we advance to a next step called college. We then get a specific formation for 2 years. After that we move on to university

University is about 2000$ each semester.

Im currently saving up to study at berklee but I dont think ill be able to afford the 15 grand per semester

Just beware music becoming more about "work" than "passion". You don't wanna kill it.
