When not in a band...playing regularly, does your GAS diminish?

For me it does. I have a lesser interest in gear overall when I don't have a place to apply it. I still play & learn stuff, but I'm on the fence between band commitments.

I am diggin' the tone of my gear, but not wanting to buy anything 'till I know where/what I'm gonna be doing.

Thoughts?

Just the opposite. Not playing out gives me time to tweak my rig, tone, basses, etc. If anything, I spend/swap more when I'm not gigging. With all that free time, it's the perfect opportunity to chase the elusive "perfect tone"!

Although after 30 something years of playing, you'd think I'd have found it by now!

I'm the same way. Not thinking about music leads me to think about my gear instead. Gigging makes me wanna upgrade my rig, but not basses.

I love the sound the gear I have gets. It's just a traditional Precision sound. I just don't get hung up on stuff until I know what I am going to be doing musically.

I look like crazy and wonder for sure. If a great deal came up, I'd jump on it but, I am not actively wanting to pull the trigger on anything...yet.

An Olympic White Precision w/rosewood & tort always looks nice though.

This is me 100%!

I took some time off from playing in a band and stopped looking at gear. I was recently asked to join a band and have been shopping for another bass ever since.

Nah, other way 'round. Not playing and not practicing means I spend more time on the 'net which fuels GAS. But playing and practicing let's me know my gear and realize that it's great stuff so I don't need anything else really.

Yup, same here lol

Being band sedentary ends up making me want to tweak and do stuff much more than when I'm playing with the buds. But playing on your own can bring to light some things that might need improvement, like a new set of strings or adjusting your bass to make it play better. To kick my gas, I stay FAR away from any musical store and try to cut back on the bass porn

I'm another of the "the more I play the less GAS I have" tribe.

i seem to buy more crap when im not gigging. i guess its to keep me occupied, since on the gig the differnce between a LMII and newer LMIII means absolutely nothing to an audience member.. when when im practicing, the differnce is obvious..

Same here. When I have more gigs, I'm more focused on making sure my stuff is in good working order, and less concerned about more stuff.
