Question Where best to buy Jazz CDs online in UK

Sign in to disble this ad
Wondered whether you Jazz guys could suggest a few places I might try.

Some people say only use Megastores, others seem to swear by specialist jazz suppliers.

Advice appreciated as always.

If shopping online, I generally head for www.amazon.co.uk

www.crazyjazz.co.uk has a huge selection (inc a lot of rare stuff), but prices are not that cheap.

The Fopp in Nottingham is very good for jazz - I have spent more money in there than I care to think about! Their pricing can be erratic, but it's worth popping in regularly to see what's cheap - for example, I have picked up many classic albums from the Blue Note and CTI labels for five pounds a piece.

I generally avoid the likes of HMV and Virgin, unless they have a particularly good sale on.

They're not bad; I have even bought some stuff from them that you can't find here or whatever(I bought MacDonald's Revolution In The Head, the RHCP's Live In Hyde Park...found a Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac cd 'cheap' vs. as an expensive IMPORT here).

Dave-
...has that Miles' DVD been issued yet?

Out next Monday over here, apparently. Out in the US a couple of weeks later I think.

It's now called 'Miles Electric - A Different Kind of Blue'

I've bought stuff from Amazon and also US - based shops where there was no local alternative - JimK told me about some DVDs and specialist CDs - I bought Craig Garfinkel's CD from CD Baby, as well!!

If I'm browsing for Jazz - I like to go to real shops - most famous is Ray's Jazz - which was in Soho and is now part of Foyles (Charing Cross Road) and has a very nice cafe, where you can sit all day and listen to great Jazz - they also have free performances - like Avishai Cohen did a duo at lunchtime!!

Almost equally famous probably, in London is Mole Jazz - I finally tracked down Ed's recommendation of Lee Konitz's "Motion", there on Japanese import (!) - but it's not in a very nice area - King's Cross and I would only recommend it to the brave!!
