Where is the best place to sell a bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello All:
I did a search and couldn't find anything related to my question so thought I would ask. In your opinion, where is the best place to sell a nice bass. I may have need of this in the near future and thought I would get some opinions. I have sold on Ebay before but thought that the community might have some thoughts on better options. I know that there is a forum here for selling and would be more than happy to use it. I also know that there are a number of other sites for listing basses and equipment as well. I just wondered what your thoughts were when it somes to selling nice equipment to serious buyers. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I always prefer to deal locally if at all possible then you communicate with the buyer better and there are no issues to be brought up if the buyer has actually seen said bass and played it in person.

Become a Contributing member here and sell basses via the Talkbass Classifieds.

As far as I'm concerned it's the best... then local Craigslist but Nashville Craigslist is a hell hole of extreme low-ballers. So most things I sell get sold here.

Thanks for the feedback so far - I've been meaning to move up to contributing member anyway ( just gotta get an avatar together ). Sounds like this may be the place to start.

Craigslist is a crapshoot as far as I'm concerned. Whenever I put anything on Craigslist all the emails I get are either lowball offers or someone with terrible grammar who can barely speak english asking me if western union's OK.

CL is only for local deals, obviously. Saves you time and money.

I know....just doesn't seem right somehow not to have one!

And I'm not a big Craigslist fan either. Looks like I'll use TB when the time comes. Thanks all!

Best place to sell a bass right now? Try a different planet w/a functional economy!

I've had good luck here and on Craigslist. The keys to using CL effectively are:

1) Do your research for what comparable instruments actually sell for here, BassGear.com, Harmony Central, eBay etc. Know your rock-bottom price (but make sure it's realistic)!
2) Have good pix and as much information on specs/condition as possible (weight, scale length, dings/issues, repairs, modifications, what all the knobs/switches do). Linking to the manufacturer's pages is helpful. Tell people why you're selling up front.
3) State your terms. I always go for a firm price on CL and state cash only, no shipping, in person, serious inquiries only. Don't even respond to somebody who answers your ad and asks for different terms or price. I don't play games and won't tolerate people who do.
4) Give a phone # you check frequently. Tell people when they can reach you, and when you can show them the gear. Ask them to reply with a phone # and a good time for them to talk/check out gear.
5) If you're selling multiple items, price them separately (unless you're truly giving a ridiculous package deal) and consider separate ads.

In short: Know your lowest price. Give as much information as possible in the ad/pix/links. In my experience, the fewer times you go back & forth with little bits of info, the more likely you are to actually sell the thing. Tell people when/how to reach you, and ask them for same. Don't be afraid to walk away from a sketchy person or haggler. 95% of the people posting gear for sale on CL don't know *** they're doing and post the same overpriced crap for weeks/months on end.

I've sold quite a few things (including boutique basses) this way in the last year on the SF Bay CL within a week of posting the ad, and have always gotten my asking price. Usually the person who buys it is the first one to check it out--they don't want to miss out on a good deal.

winston's right on the ball. I've used Talkbass and Craig's List pretty effectively both as a buyer and as a seller. The key is keeping calm and firm plus being very friendly and communicative.

Thanks for the advice! There is a lot of good information there. I don't think CL is the best bet in my area (nowheresville)so I'll use TB when the time comes where someone can appreciate things a bit more. Thanks again!
