Where Did Metal Go?

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't mean screamo. I don't mean hardcore, metalcore, grindcore, or the army 'core' of engineers. (NO "___CORE"!!!)
I don't mean Death Metal, I don't mean Thrash (Megadeth and Slayer are barely tolerable for me). What has happened to cutting edge, heavy music where the vocals are still musical (Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Extreme, etc.)?

after seeing ANOTHER band who's otherwise phenomenal musical arrangements are ruined by the shrill screaming of a 17 year old "scene" guy in skinny jeans, I have to question if metal is as dead as decent mainstream rock. Prog is hanging by a thread, but making a slight comeback (Muse and Dream Theater anyone?) Why isn't decent metal doing the same?

[PLEASE NOTE: This is a rant, and is not a slam against anyone who plays "Core" or other screamy stuff. I just can't stand it. Nothing personal, but I don't like this stuff.]

I don't think there are many popular new bands that play Classic Metal. The bands influenced by Maiden/Sabbath would be working everywhere from Prog to Extreme Metal.

Check your local, independent record store. Aquarius records in California has a great website with great updates.

It went to the same place that Disco, Glam, Hair and Prog.

Come to think of it, Where did music go? The 18-27 year old's have totally FAILED!
Every generation from the 50's on brought a new or different type of music except this one.

Put down your PS2's and write some good music!

A few weeks back the wife and I saw Godsmack and Disturbed at Pine Knob outside Detroit. Don't know if you like them but they both have great vocals (in addition to the music) that can be heard and understood, IMO.

Check out bands on meteor city records. Most seem to have that classic Sabbath sound.

check out motionless in white (to keep from getting burned, abigail, and ghost in the mirror) they are the screaming metal, but they have outstanding clean vocals as well, no where near the same as iron maiden, but its worth a shot

They have you probably just don't like it and or do not consider it music (hip hop, techno, mash-up, basically all that stuff that relies on post modern notions of reorganization).

Unfortunately everything is plastic these both literally and figuratively.

Occasionally something good will come along but it never gets much attention.

there is an abundance of great metal around, the thing is, it isn't necessarily popular enough to be advertised just everywhere, so you need to look for it to find the kind you like

there are lots of sabbath-inspired bands around, and a handful of really good ones too--check out the 'stoner/doom' thread for plenty of examples

I like The Sword a lot for that kind of music

PS2's...? Also, are you saying that music around today isn't different or new to what was being recorded 10+ years ago, I beg to differ

The Wildhearts. Not necessarily new, but if you don't know them, you should. Their self titled album is just awesome- came out a few years ago.
