So I posted an amp for sale on Bassgear. At what point would you recognize the scam. How soon would you, at least, get the hint of a scam? Here are the emails:
Jimmy: Hello,
I saw your advert over the web and am much interested in buying it. I live here in Ohio, I will be responsible for the shipment down to my location, so please kindly write me back . I am Looking forward to your soonest reply
Me: Jimmy,
Great to hear from you. Sorry I did not get back sooner - was at a minor league baseball game with the family. I can ship the amp as soon as you want by whatever carrier you want. If you have a UPS or Fedex account, I can do that as well. Payment can me made via Paypal, pesonal check, I can also take a credit card.
Thank you so very much
Jimmy: Hello
Thanks for getting back to me.. I would like to send the payment via money order.. Cos that is the easier way for me to send the payment to you.. Please i will need this information from you....
Name in Full..............
Address............
Zip code......................
Country..................
Home number............
Awaiting all this details now
Me: No problem.
Nme address and phone provided
No disrespect meant to you but I had an awful experience selling gear on the internet using a money order. The guy send a fraudulent Money Order via a stolen FedEX account. The FBI was invovled and it was not pretty. I hope you understand that I will have to wait for the money order to clear before I can ship the amp. If this is a problem, feel free to call me at the above number and we can work this out
Sincerely,
Mike Dimin
Jimmy: Thanks for getting back to me.. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Once burned, twice shy.
Don't blame you one bit. I wouldn't go for a money order either. |

| | | | Right in the first message. Scam replies pretty much always say "the item" or whatever whereas real people mention what it is |

| | | | Reeks of a scam. My general rule of thumb is, if they don't mention in their response what it is that I am selling in the ad (i.e. bass, amp, pedal etc), I ignore them. Phrases like "your advert" are big time warnings.
Good Luck!

"am much interested in buying it. "
"I would like to send the payment via money order.. Cos that is the easier way for me to send the payment to you"
Small things like that make it seem fishy... I'm not saying that I would pick up on it immediately but I would be hesitant.
SCAMS=EVERYWHERE

Between "advert" (rather than "post" or similar), "on the web" (rather than "on bassgear" or similar), and "it" (rather than naming the item specifically) it looks fishy enough I probably would not have even responded.
Once he lists the info he needed from you and it included "country" you should never have responded because at that point it's 100% crystal clear that it's a scam.
p.s. I would also recommend editing the OP so it doesn't include your personal info.

[/i] | I usually ask if they also need my social security and bank account numbers to seal the deal.
They never seem to get back to me?

I contacted the Postmaster General's office for more info. They mentioned that there are stolen and counterfeit US Postal Money Orders AND if you attempt to cash one of these, the first thing the Feds do is investigate YOU for trying to pass the bad paper.
You just can't win.
