Where/what is the "new" cutting edge music???

Sign in to disble this ad
i have been going back and listening to late 70's early 80's punk bands that i didnt exposure to back then. i really love the raw energy, and the "realness" of the music. (no pretention or preconceived notions, and a real grip on the pulse of what was happening in the streets). i also realize that this was true in past musical styles such as rock and roll, and jazz, and blues...as well as in styles since punk such as underground, rap, and hip hop.

what music is on the pulse now? "punk", rock, and rap are now WAY commercialized. blues is VERY played out, and jazz is going the way of classical music (meaning becoming a timeless entity of vast importance.)

i see new punk bands coming up that are emboding the true punk bands of the 76-83 era. (antiformulaic, anticorporate, thought inducing ). im not going to cite names as most of these bands are only known to thier local/regional crowds. i dont know if i would call it a third (or fourth) revival, but its definitely better than the crap that is called "punk" by the media. i think rap is generally the same... ie. a lot of pop crap, and some local artist who are still hungry.

is this all there is right now, or is there something im missing? is there a new underground?

its out there in small dank clubs, crammed in with clone bands that care more about image then music. there is an underground its just hard so shift though all the s*** bands to find the good ones.
heres some "underground" bands i've been listening to alot lately:

I hate sally(great metal/hardcore from kingston, Ont)
3tards(stupid goof ball punk in the vein of snfu)
Fire still burns(from jersey ex members of lifetime and bigwig)
the Creepshow(good rocko-horror-whatever-billy)
the Video dead(insanely good hardcore punk)
the Heatskores(fast ska punk)
Cermonial Snips(fast punk with horns)

I'm pretty sure all of these bands of a myspace page.

Great question. You don't hear about it because it ss still underground, but it's out there.

Based on my opinion:

First of all, go to

http://myspace.com/theclaudiaquintet

and dig Drewslate. THIS stuff.

And...

Google the record label called "Tzadik". Some of the stuff is about to come up. Especially the stuff fusing Jewish and Latin music.

And, lastly, in the rock vein...

Maybe hardcore/metalcore (not close to the hardcore punk of yesteryear) for the rock scene. It's underground, I guess, since it's not something you'll hear on the radio, although not subterranean enough to avoid notice entirely. It seems to be what all the kids want to play though.

The new hardcore seems to be a big thing nowadays, and if you check out some underground records over the last few years there is a lot of good, raw, pure stuff. However it's obvious that when anything becomes popular, some bands will bastardize it and make it more accessible and watered down. Seek out some of the better stuff.

Indie is also pretty big IMO. Many underground indie bands are finally getting recognition for some good stuff released in the past decade.

Admittedly, though, I can't really pinpoint a cutting-edge genre. I'd like to know myself.

I love to hear new cutting edge bands, but I find them really hard to find. A band posted one on Talkbass a few days ago that I found really really good, you can listen here www.thebellrays.com. Also, if you want you can listen to my band too, it's kind of new, and original. and Fenderjazz, your band is really good, it's nice to find good bands from montreal, are you guys playing any shows anytime soon?

I think your mistaken about the current Jazz Scene. To me, its the coolest and most accessable it has ever been, with bands like Medeski Martin & Wood, Soulive, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Garage a Trois, Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet ect. I bet there are underground type bands like that in many genres though. If they were easy to locate, they wouldnt be underground lol.

You might look for places like these to check bands out...

Noncommercial music radio. Indie bands and DJs galore. Some not bad world and jazz programming as well. If it's up and coming, it'll show up here first. Then you can play music snob.

I hate to reference myself, but I think this will give you many ideas. Things are happening, even though they're not popular yet. Disregarding that thread, check out the Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!. Probably the most likely to change popular music (as though that matters). But yeah.

i appreciate the responses. definitely keep them coming. i havent got a chance to listen to everything yet, but im planning on it.

i figured that there was just the underground scene that im also in (as all of you have confirmed) but i dint know if i was missing a new genre (unless someone has listed a new genre here, and i have just missed it.)

i keep hearing ppl say "punk is dead", and the new punk certainly killed it. but i think the ideaology, and disgust with the status quo that started the punk movement (and many before it) is still driving a vibrant music scene that you never hear on populist media.

so to me, "punk" will never be dead, but just have a dif name.

I think its going to come to the "emocore" acts, get some of the things I love of "hardcore" music, but without people who dont know who to sing/scream and be able to go in and out of that voice. The singer from underoath can do this, in the same word start it by screaming and end it singing. But I dont think the masses will take the relentless breakdowns plam muted droped C guitar to blasting double bass drum lines. BUt its still my favorite type of music to play unfortantly the rest of my band is really into it. oh well

Actually, the new cutting edge music is techno. Drum n bass, hardtek/hardcore, breakbeat artists are more and more popular, and hiphop DJs too, birdy nam nam or DJ Qbert, Krush, Shadow...

Techno new? Techno is bloody ancient. Techno is where the new scenes stopped. punk, goth, indusrtial, techno Why in my day, we were changing styles every two or three years.

Much as vacuous, populist, dull emo killed punk, trance destroyed techno. And, that was around six years ago. Which explains me playing bass, while my tuntables colect dust.

I have heard some excelent breakbeat hardcore, coming out of Mascow lately. But that's just a continuation of techno, not a new scene.

I dont mean techno as a specific genre, I mean techno as in electronic music. Sorry for the confusion. But thats what in nowadays, and thats what people want to hear.

I'm not really into that style of music, but a friend of mine played me some SquarePusher. Holy Sh!t. I'd call that cutting edge enough for me.

In my opinion there is an endless amount of new and cutting edge music out there. You just have to look beyond the metal/punk/hardcore/whateveryoucallit music.
