I think I finally found the combination of Bass and Amp rig that I really like. Then I realized that I have more money into my Amp set up than Bass (I guess in my mind I had always thought it would be the other way around).
Bass: $600
- 2001 Am Fender P Bass (used): $600
Amp: $1,054
- Head: Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 (new): $704
- Cab: Bergantino HT112 (used): 350
So, in your 'Go To' set up, your one primary bass and your favorite amp set up... where your money? (not including affects, cables etc)

Still a lot more spent on instruments than the amp/cab/tuner/effects. There's maybe $3000 total for amps, etc, and I figure just under $10,000 in instruments.
A bit more if you count our piano.

But if I added the cost of all my basses and compared that with the cost of all my amps and cabs then.........

| | | | It matters if you are going through a PA. If not you need pounds in the amp. A so-so bass will "Get You By". So-so is the musically correct though not gear head correct stuff - Korea has that down.
Now - if getting heard is not a problem - like you are in a good PA. A good bass bought used retains value and is a nice investment. Amps just get old.
Now - you can not go junk either way. Garbage in is garbage out. It just matters which end is "So-So". Top line vs. PeaVey or Alembic vs. Korea.

You can find a cheap bass that plays well and mod it by throwing in some nice pickups to improve tone. IME, it's tough to make a cheap amp sound like a nice rig or have it keep up in volume wars. That said, I run a D.I. and no amp more often than not these days so perhaps I should start to think differently. |

Several have said it on other thraeds and I'll chime in as well: buy the best cabinet you can possibly afford, big enough to fill any venue you may possibly play in. You can find bargains on good used heads unless you really have your heart set on a high-end amp.
As far as basses, my "go to" main stage bass is a 2001 ' burst MIM P, upgarded with a tort guard with a reissue p-up & CTS pots. I'll put it up right there with my 2010 Am. Std maple/ oly white Precision, and I don't worry nearly as much scratching or dinging it. Used, you can pick one up for around $350.00 and toss in another $100.00 for upgrades. |

Though it can be amplified.
...But I've never done that.
Yet it does have a preamp.
...But I bought it for playing unamplified exclusively.
Gah! My head! It asplode!
