I play my Martin almost daily. I have done a few gigs with it and just jammed with some guys a few times, but like most people, I play it mostly by myself when I'm at home. A lot of people look at ABG's as a novelty item. Most of them aren't loud enough to hack through a mix without an amp. Because of that fact alone, many people just choose to play an electric. I wouldn't want to be without mine, though.

Ya know, that 'loud enough' comment makes me wonder...why don't they include in some ABGs a speaker or something? Sure, not generally a great idea, but takes away some of the volume problem...

i bought a cheap rogue acoustic elctric off musicians friend about 4 years ago, and loved layign it with my old band at a lot of acoustic shows. now i dont play it as muhc since im ina big fretless and chord rut, it soudns best for fat fingerstyle grooves. if you want to try one, ill sell it for 175 with a gigbag. btu yeah, aside fomr acoustic gigs i can see much practicla use for them (low volume practice as well), unless you have a 2000 dollar rob allen.

Mine isn't loud enough to play with a drummer or anything, but I can be heard through a couple acoustic guitars well enough. It should be stated that I have a Martin Alternative X Bass, which has an aluminum top. I also slap it a lot, and that makes a huge difference. If I play single notes with my fingers, it gets drowned out. Having the extra confidence that I won't be tearing up my bass because of it's construction, really lets me dig in quite hard. With ABG's, how you play it really determines how well you will be heard. For jams with a drummer and gigs, I plug it into my rig.
