Otherwise, there are glimpses of that kind of attitude with Steve Vai when he's not showing his guitar chops, Mike Keneally, Adrian Belew, hmm, who did they play with long time ago.... |

Frank Zappa was unique - his combination of talents (instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, humorist) and the breadth and depth of his music set him apart. Not necessarily above, but definitely apart.

While she doesn't have any of the humor, and she doesn't have the sheer wierdness that FZ did, I think that Meshell N'Degiocello will have a long, long, long musical career as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, writer and performer, with many killer albums to come. She might be the closest thing to Frank, in a different sort of way. |

I am a fan but really, no one is even in the same ballpark. I can list folks who are mining little pieces of what Frank could do, but nobody's got the big picture. |

Basically who is the current active musician thats closest to Zappa's genius.

Basically who is the current active musician thats closest to Zappa's genius. | Zappa had tons of influences, Stravinsky/Varèse, lots of blues guitar players, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson.... Various do-wop groups.
As they say, great artists steal. Same happens now with the Zappa-influenced bands and artists. |

Perhaps someone who is more in the 'composer' vein. Not all geniuses are showmen. |

That being said, I don't think there will ever be someone of similiar circumstance just because things are much different now on the business side. Someone doing such odd stuff and actually being able to make an album (let alone a LOT of albums) was almost unheard of in his time, so he was sort of a lone wierdo in a way. Nowadays just start looking around and you'll find all sorts of crazy, eccentric, intelligent, odd music that's readily available. The environment is so different that it's unlikely anyone can have the same sort of impact simply by being Good+Strange.
