Would be pretty nice to make a living out of what you love most . But you never know so that's why I'm studying Biology so I can have something safe to rely on .

Right now I'm just a broke student, but after my band's album gets released in the next month or two we should be able to sustain ourselves without spending our own personal money for stuff like van payments/gas/insurace, practice space rent, etc.'

Nothing to live off of, but definitely a nice situation all around.

No offense, but keep dreaming. And start socking it away because you won't have any health insurance, retirement, you'll be paying a butt-load of taxes on the proceeds from any money coming back from the first "release"; oh!, and don't forget paying for your own GAS, VAN PAYMENTS, and INSURANCE, and find a free practice space, and so on, and so on, and so on.....
Plan on getting a JOB! This economy right now is NOT supporting musicians!

Just my humble opinion being out there right now scoping it out..................

Biology is probably not something safe to rely on

Does the Air Force count as "a band" ...

To be serious, I've always lost money out of being in bands!! The money I've spent on gear has always been more than I've earned!

The only time I think I made an official profit, was on a TV appearance !!

I can't even find a band. Much less make money out of it. But then again I used to love computers a lot, now I work in computer science and I like my job but I had to find a different hobby because I got sick of looking at a computer screen. I think I'll keep music as a hobby. If I ever make any money out of it I'll use it to buy other instruments/gear.

Played anywhere from 2 to 7 nights a week for years then dropped to usually only a night or two a week after breaking with my ex.

She still plays 2 or 3 nights and has never had another job in her life.

That wouldn't necessarily just apply to musicians!!

How do you define "make a living"? :-)

I started playing bass 33 years ago and have been lucky enough to stay working the whole time, with only occasionally taking on some side work to make ends meet.

Pereseverance, some luck, and a very understanding wife are some of the requirements.

For me it was food that got in the way of making a living at it.
