Question Who inspired you to play music or listen to it differently? How & why?

Sign in to disble this ad
In the hopes of lightening the mood of this OT section a bit,...

Who impacted you to the point where you decided to play music, play it seriously (as opposed to as a hobby), or listen to it differently (i.e. not background noise while vacuuming)?

How did he/they do this?

Why did it impact you so?

I, for one, am very curious to see people's responses.

Three people.

John Entwistle and Pete Townshend are two people that inspired me to play music and listen to it from different perspectives, the third person, my dear sister, who listens to more bands than any human on this planet and can find the good in any song, has taught me to analyze a song to the smallest detail.

I asked "who," not "what."

My father.

He is a nice man and did what he had to do,...he was more of a father than a dad. He had awesome taste in music and the fact that he was in the navy and could buy components super cheap overseas and bring them back stateside and re-wire the plug meant there was always a decent hi-fi stereo in the house.

Also my grandmother. I told her when I was 4 I wanted to learn how to play in instrument. It was basically because she had a big overturned drum for a toy box and what I really should have said was,..."can I take all the toys out and beat on this drum". Instead she conspired with my parents to get me a piano and lessons. 9 years of piano lessons later I switched to bass and have stuck with it ever since. I'm still a hack.

My best friend,
He gave me my first bass, and said, "try it, we can start playing. It'll be fun." I started gigging immediately with him, and we enjoyed every minute of it, even though a lot of shows ended really badly.

Two years ago he was being driven home by his long-estranged mother after a day of attempting to mend their broken relationship (he was an emancipated as a minor, 18 at the time). She drove off of the road, throwing him through the window. She was drunk, he and his younger brother were killed instantly while she lived. I play for him.

- My mom inspired me to be a musician. She had a Supremes-type band back in the day, until she got pregnant with my sister. She was also in a bunch of operas. She instilled the love of music in our whole family by constantly singing, or playing different kinds of music on the radio. She also took us to operas, musicals, and concerts of all different kinds. My mom is the one that inspired me to dissect the music that I listen to, and find the good in all kinds of music.

- I discovered the fact that I could sing while taking a dump as a 6-year-old and singing "Piece of My Love" to myself.

- I've always listened to songs from the perspective of the bass line, and that of the vocalist. I never really understood what a bass guitar was, until I found out that my father (absent since I was 2) was a bass player. From that point, I knew I wanted to make some beautiful music with a bass (now that I knew and understood what one was) and finally actually bought one at age 17.

Well, aren't you special?

The thread content or title don't magically change to suit you.

Insinuating nobody ever influenced you is pretty laughable in itself.

Thanks for playing, however badly.

and that was when i realized there was more than one way to listen to music. opened my ears, let me tell you what. later, ron

I think since you've been here a month (at most), you should tone down the e-douchebaggery

That being said, the first time I heard Paranoid (the album), I was hooked on Geezer.

This thread is now about how the OP is a noob who doesn't understand Off-Topic boards.

Edit: Also, I know the irony is palpable coming from some one who joined these boards less than 2 years ago.

Thats really amazing.

My story pales in comparison but I'd say my grandmother and great grandfather, My grandmother for all the hours spent listening to her vinyls of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

My great grandfather for the stories about him playing trumpet while in the Army just to calm himself down, really taught me that music is more than just sound.

I stole Queen's greatest hits and Pink Floyd The Wall when I was a kid. I played Queen until the tape was warped and begged my parents for drums

Whatever, dude.

The day I care what somebody thinks of me on the Internet is the day I cancel my service. Life's too short to bother with other people's opinions on one's person especially when that relationship's depth extends to simple characters on a screen.

FWIW, I think calling somebody a douche (or insinuating by proxy that I am one) is much worse than what I wrote. But hey,... that's perfectly acceptable since you've been here longer than I, right?

I'm just here to have some fun, gather some info, and share a few laughs. Posting crap just to give me a hard time when I posted a legitimate question with the purpose to lighten the mood and positively contribute to the forum is simply pointless... IMHO anyway.

We now return you to your (hopefully more) cheerful programming.
