Who uses Stage Names?

TBer's, who personally uses a stage name? Why?

I have never been a fan of stage names, but i am currently working on a teacher certification, and feel that it is better for my students to keep my band life and professional life separate. This is not to say that I plan to hide the fact that I play music, but I'd like that aspect of to be a bit of a mystery to students. Quite honestly, a lot of it has to do with social networking. I don't want middle school students "liking" my band on facebook and then reading a posts on the page that would reflect poorly on me. All that said, I am still on the fence with the issue... the concept feels too fake to me.

Post-metal would be the closest tag for the band I am currently in, a term that always gets the stoner rock association, which doesn't apply to me or the band.

I have been, and will eventually be playing jazzy-funk again too (ie; crusty hippy crowd), and occasional cover gigs. Either way, it is a lot of time spent in bars.

It's a good question. I teach community college on and off and I am increasingly careful about my presence on the web. Think of it as using a pseudonym rather than stage name. I think my newest project is either going to need a pseudonym or no name / personal info from me at all.

Tell everyone you're Dave Edwardson.

j/k

It would be cool if the whole band adopted a mob theme with the names - Vinnie, Paulie, Jackie, Sonny, etc.

Or just call yourself _______the bassplayer

Well not so much a stage name- but the guys in a cuppla my bands call me "KNOTS". I'm a skinny guy, so 'knots in cotton'

Oh & yrs ago, ('90-'95) when I played in a BUBBLEGUM band-doing Sweet, 1910 Fruitgum Co., Archies, T-REX, etc -basically any POP from the 68-75 period- we all took on stage names.

I was Sly Meweevil, Reggie Legend(voc's/guitar) Auggie Sausage-Keys, Fudgeman-Drums... can't remember the 3 others.

Stage name is the same as my name here.
A roadie gave my that label almost 40 years ago and it stuck(10 or more years with the same road crew, we kept each other in line and alive).

Since I've ALWAYS had a day job, the guy on the stage IS a somewhat different person although probably a more real version of JC.

When I was front man in an original band, I'd make up names for my bandmate for every gig. I'd always make sure to have a goofy backstory for each "From the snow shrouded forests of eastern Latvia, on drums Roberto Sanchezovitch!" stuff like that.

Right there with ya......I'm a teacher with regular gigs at some rowdy places. My real name is not on the band page or anything. I change it regularly just because I can. Right now it's Sven Svenson. Usually it's just Prez.....given to me by a singer.

One band I play in uses stage names for everyone, but it's just for fun. In that band I am Screamin' Doc Johnson. The rest of the guys go by Legs Akimbo, Slim Howlin' Mudbelly, Sticks Bambam, Sweet Stavin' Stavie, and Da Pope.

For all things related to my band, I use my name, "ag cur gaeilge", which is Dáithí O Loingsigh. This is soley because the band markets somewhat based on the fact that we're Irish and we take influence from our myths and folk music within our project. In fact, I've got into the habit so much, that its started to stick away from music now too.
