Why is the bassplayer allways bigger than the guitarplayer in the band?

Sign in to disble this ad
The guitar player ( mostly the lead) is always this tiny, thin guy who does thouse freakin solos while the bass player allways is the tall big guy who seems so calm ( most african american comp bass players also allways smiles:P)

Even though im tall im quite thin, but even though that i am taller and fater than all the guitar players i have played with in my band:S

I think Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey or Marcus Miller and Anthony Jackson might argue about the bassist always being bigger.

Not to mention Meshell N'Degeocello!

Not always the case dude.
I'm the smallest guy in my band at 5 foot 6 and I play the bass.

I'm 28 now dude, so not much hope of that!
I reckon I may have stunted my growth by playing the bass, having such a big heavy instrument weighing me down when I was meant to be growing! he he

I've always clearly been the biggest one in all of my bands. I'm not even that big really, 6'2" 200lbs

For the majority of cases, this seems to be true. Cliff Burton stood taller than all the other band members, and a lot of bassists are taller/fatter than guitarists. I think its because the little skinny guys can't handle such a big, macho instrument!! There are exceptions... and small scale basses of course, but, my mom actually asked me the same question one day "Why are bass players usually the biggest?"... It's usually bassists and drummers who are bigger.

I find that my taste for nice basses is quite moreish as well.

Some here might call it GAS.

Maybe the bass player often has a life on the side, he maybe goes to sport and so on, not so manic as the guitar player who often just sits home trying to practice some licks and after time gets skinny.

Not my case! I'm ALWAYS the smallest. Being a petite female bassist and all.

  • The bass and drums are "manly" instruments that big guys feel more comfortable playing?
  • The bass and drums are more friendly to guys who have big hands?

uh....ever see Trout Fishing in America? Ezra Idlet (guitar) is 6'9" and Keith Grimwood (bass) is 5'1". Really. Their stuff is pretty "light" fare but Grimwood is actually a hell of a player. One of those guys that, when he opens up and lets it rip, you never see it coming.
