I don;t get it either, it just strikes me as someone trying to make you believe "I been around man, I'm a veteran" when nothing could be further from the truth. To me, reliced/pre-aged instruments are for poseurs and wannabes. There's no substitute for actual experience.
What about someone who buys a real vintage bass? Are they trying to fool people too, because they own something that isn't a part of their 'actual experience'?

You don't like it, great. Nobody else needs to hear that.

Anyone seen the show Gas Monkey Garage, or whatever it's called?
That's a perfect example, they'll take a 60-70 year old beater, drop in a brand new, engine, drivetrain, chassis as well in some cases, only leaving the outer shell all rusted and distressed.

They sold that old Rambler for a butt load of cash and they actually polished the rusty paint or lack there of.
It turned out looking shiny, almost like they cleared over the rust.
I personally would have preferred a nice paint job on that particular one, but it was cool in its own way.

I wasnt saying "punks" drive the rat rod craze, I meant it more as a metaphor.

I'd rather see threads about what we DO like rather than what the don't like. I also hope this is the last thread about relic/road worn hate.

How about a thread where we "hate" that everything we disagree with is "hating"?

I am almost as tired of everything being "hate" as I am of "it's all good". Ha! Yeah, it's a personal problem! Hardeeharharhar. Don't hate me for hating the use of hate.

No worries....it's all good.

I dare say that every car with a nice paint job is not a trailer queen just as every ratrod is not "driven and driven hard".

It's cosmetics. Nothing more.

If we all liked the same stuff all the time the forum would become pretty stale and boring before long. I dont see a difference in opinion as negative or "hating" just a different perspective nothing more. What if all there was under the OP topic was nothing but +1's , that my friend would be boring.

Is it not hate??

Lol, when people resort to labeling anyone with a road worn or reliced bass as a poser, or starts listing off all the negative reasons the owner has behind owning it. That's pretty much the definition of hating on something. No?

This subject goes so far beyond just a difference of opinion around here, it's sad.

I guess I would have assumed that relic'd from a car perspective would be like door dings and rust.

I give this a "meh". Kinda reminds me when grunge came around and the anti-image was an image, but it's not an image. People care too much about that stuff.

Road Worn: I buy em' cause you hate em' HA !! And I take a wet Steel hanger to em' in anger cause it feels SO good! And yes I have re relicked my RW P to my personal liking.
And fah' criminy sakes people its not about the looks ( I think most of the guys complaining about this never made thier own "Relic"..like owining a bass for 30 or 40 yrs and knowing where all of the dings came from, I have , a 57 Precision I bought in 67"!! ) It's about playability. I own a bunch of boutique basses I play this one cause it feels good.....GET..IT ...Duhoooooo

When asked the question, "Fake or real?" my response is, "Who cares?" If it looks good and feels good, don't ask... just go with it.

I've been playing for over 40 years. That doesn't change based on the bass I'm playing.

The whole idea about a scared up bass showing experience level is about the dumbest thing I've seen around here.

A beginner bassist can play a worn vintage bass.
A pro bassist can play a brand new bass.
Just as,
A beginner bassist can play a brand new bass.
A pro bassist can play a worn vintage bass.

The appearance of a basses paint job has absolutely NOTHING to do with it's handlers ability.

So where does this notion come from, that an owner of a Road Worn bass, is trying to convey experience?
What is so difficult about accepting that it's a look, and some like that look quite a bit.
Personally I think the old worn basses, and the artificially worn basses (in most cases) looks awesome!
I also appreciate a clean and shiny bass for exactly what it is.
They don't mix for me.
I want my clean ones to stay clean, & pretty.
And I'd want my worn ones to look nicely worn.

Okay here's the deal. 1 Bass player out of 100's maybe 1000's has been gigging hard every week and using the Bass He loves. He's had it for decades and it shows it. Some players want to be that Bass player but aren't yet or maybe never will be.

But the MIM Fender Road worn basses are Killer and I'd own one If I had some disposable income. For now I'll be making memories with my Ric.

When a player is fully grown up, he/she doesn't feel the need to justify or explain ANY of the equipment.

I got my RW Jazz because it was Lightweight, and Cheap and played great. Feels close enough to my '64 jazz that is worth too much to take on a bar gig.... I put Alleva Coppolo J Set in it , and it plays great, sounds great... And if it got stolen, ill get another.. Cant get another '64 without giving up a kidney
