Eh, I suppose I should elaborate before I'm accused of attacking certain members. That's not the case, the case is everyday I see new threads with topics like

- It's electric bass, not bass guitar
- This bassist is overrated
- This bassist is underrated
- Guitarists don't like me
- What's the coolest riff (to play really loud at guitar center)
- My band doesn't want me to play flashy stuff.

My retort:
- Get over it, it's a title. Also, the bass guitar is a variant of the guitar, not the double bass. If we want to get picky, an electric bass should describe an EUB.
- So what?
- No they aren't
- Find new guitarists, they are a dime a dozen, bassists are rare.
- The C Major scale: It's a real panty dropper.
- Maybe you should take context into account. Sometimes you gotta keep it steady or the song will fall apart. You need to learn there is a right and a wrong time to pick it up. I play a little flashy: No one has ever complained, because I know when to do it.

Music is an art, not a war.

I guess I'm not the only one who is bothered by this. I find myself thinking about what time highschool gets out so I can check out equipment in peace without some teenager playing Flea riffs extrememly loud in order to impress everyone.

i feel the same way...everybody always has to be better than someone else...thats why i can't listen to prog rock any more...well, mainly dream theatre, because all my prog rock friends are always arguing who can play faster and more arpeggios in 3 seconds and whatever...i say, why not just play music and enjoy it?

Good place to start. I'd imagine washing the goat's blood and makeup off might also help.

Music is not just an art, it's an exercise in social mechanics (if such a term exists). And a struggle to live up to your own expectations and the expectations of others (as a working professional).

Well... art is that as well... coming from an art major, there are certainly equivalents of the wanker in the guitar center.

I think that it's just human nature. People always have to compete. It makes me sick, but lends to some interesting lyrics...

Of course everyone agrees. My question is what's the point of this thread? Here is my response to your responses, in bold:

We were all immature once. Big deal. Stop being a tightass and instead of making fun of kids, try helping them on the path towards musicianship.
I mean, come on. Are you so far forgotten of your teenage years that you forget what it's like?

Here's a freaking question for you geniuses: Why is it when a kid slaps out a flea riff on a bass in GC he is automatically trying to impress people? Is it possible, just possible, that he listens to RHCP, takes big inspiration from Flea, and therefore goes and learns his basslines? Then, when sampling some basses while killing time or whatever, he plays some of the basslines he has learned? Why is that such a sin?

Threads like these are just as bad as the "you people" that you're complaining about.

You missed the word that just voided everything you said.

very true...you don't have to test out a bass by cranking the amp and slapping as fast as you can...
