My drummer uses 7000's. he likes them a lot. And he and my guitarist friend do get GAS. The guitarist's GAS led to a Taylor 714ce.

I read/hear it from other musicians all the time actually! On the guitarist and keyboardist forums I hang out on I see all kinds of GAS threads. In fact, as a part-time guitarist and keyboardist, my guitar and keyboard-related gear lust far exceeds my bass-related lust.

Have you never MET a guitarist or drummer...

The drummers I play with: One has a just got a transparent acrylic kit with 5 (FIVE!) toms. He has three other kits. Another drummer has a kit in every room of his house - his main kit is an £8000 DW kit. His practise kit has EVERY percussion instrument I ever saw - it has a pedal operated cowbell! Even the friend of mine who is just a novice drummer has more snare drums than he's played gigs.

My guitarist takes two heads, three guitars (Ibanez Jem + two RG's - though not always the SAME Jem or RG's he has about 5 Jems) to each gig. He has a rack with TWO idenitcal Korg Multi-reverbs in, a whole bunch of floor pedals and a Roland V-Guitar/Midi system. He owns about 30 guitars. Another guitarist I've played with occasionally once actually did open a guitar shop, and stocked it with his own personal collection so that it would look like they had more stuff on sale than they did.

My drummer is always talking about his "dream kit", and my guitarist is always talking about the Les Paul that he wants. They are way more annoying about GAS than I am, I just give in easier.

Yes i've met drummers and guitarists. I actually play drums. I suppose it's just that I play with broke musicians. I was always a broke drummer myself. Also I googled GAS (acronym) and it said it applied mostly to bass players.

I just think thats because of place like talkbass--usually guitar forums are filled with argument threads about who can play the fastest, and they don't have time to discuss what they want

Talk about GAS!

Yea, our guitar player shows up every week with a different rig.

Different guitar, different pedal rack, different amp. Even a couple of midi guitars, with midi computers.

Then he spends all practice messing with it, never finding the sounds he wants and being pissed.

Oh, he just bought a variaxe and put a midi piezo controller in it.

Talk about GAS! He's the worst I've ever seen. I limit my gas to a few pieces a year, not one a week.

And if you're wondering, he CAN play his A$$ OFF...

I hadn't heard about GAS before I found TB. I definitely know more guitarists than bassists with serious GAS problems, and some drummers too. But the studio/sound guys are the worst....

Personally, I'm not suffering from any serious forms of GAS. There's some stuff that I'd like to get of course, but I'm already that grown-up so I've lately been investing lots of money on furniture, a washing machine, a shower cabin etc. But now, finally, I bought the home studio equipment that I've desired for over a year. I still have to earn the money to pay it though...

Guitarists have been the worst at GAS in my experience.

My first band in San Diego involved a frontman who seemed to spend all of his time trying to dial in tone from a pedal board of doom that was constantly evolving and rotating equipment around. If only he'd spent more time practicing his guitar and less time GASing he'd probably still have a band.

Sad but true.

My one band doesn't know what GAS is. The guitarist plays the same Ibanez flying V, Marshall stack and Boss pedals he has owned for 20+ years. My singer plays a few songs on guitar at gigs and he plays a Jay Turser strat copy. The drummer has a good set of drums though.

My other band is a bit different... my guitarist just took early retirement and a wad of cash and bought a beautiful Gibson ES335 that cost a fortune and a crazy expensive hi tech Fender combo tube amp.

My experience with guitarists is that they are either relatively GAS-free (1 or 2, 3 at the most) or extremely GASSY (10+).

I haven't noticed any GAS from my drummer and only a tinge from my keyboards - but I don't know as many.

Acronym for "Gear Addiction Syndrome"

I've heard it as "Gear Acquisistion Syndrome" and in my opinion it applies to many interests. My street-rodder neighbor with 20 cars in various states of construction, that's GAS. Me with 10 guitars, 2 basses and 6 amps, definitely GAS. How about someone that has to buy more and more unusual fish for an aquarium or the tool collector that has to have one of everything in the Snap-On catalog? I also know a guy that buys houses with the intention to stay but finds himself compelled to sell and buy another house once there is nothing left to remodel. Model railroaders are usually worse than musicians. Ham Radio or computer hobbyists tend to want the latest and greatest. It might not be called GAS in these other fields but IMO it's exactly the same thing.

BTW, the most "addictive" possesions that I'm aware of are effects pedals.
