Why isnt bass playing competitive...?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive just been watching a series of programs that have breakdancing, skateboarding, BMXing etc.. alot of these programs are about competing against eachother..

all of these sports pastimes are very creative...so why doesnt something like bass playing or music involve competition? you might say that they are just as creative..

you may say that yes music does have awards, but its not quite the same...

what i think is music is much closer to the soul...

anythoughts i hadnt thought about?

You missed one. Music isn't a sport that I know of.
It doesn't prevent people from entring fastest foot drummer, battle of the bands and so on.

ick ick ick

I don't think you could pay me to sit and watch that.

To me, playing bass is all about support & cooperating... Like they do at those Bass Player Live shows...

They have competitions for other instruments...Guitar Center King of Blues or Guitarmageddon for example.

Hmm, watching who could tap the fastest? Or who could bend the biggest interval? Or most notes per second? I'm sure the advertisers would realize the huge number of eye balls watching that.

know one yet has said anything that convinces me...although its the way that it is...

someones creativity is just as important as the creativity of say a BMX'er..

oh i just spotted.. Big old Harrys post...support....ok but this doesnt really cut it because lots of sports have numurous members and are creative in the way they play..

Music is no more a competitive sport than painting is a competitive sport. .

Though judging from some people's opinions, there are those who assume they're the residing pro and everyone else must be wrong and needs to hear what the message board guru has to say.

Art is not a competition.

There ARE tons of musicians out there trying to be the best and they like to make everyone else feel like trash, instead of teaching others music.

This thread is ridiculous.

I just can't imagine the rules that would need to be put into place in order for bass playing to be considered a sport...actually I can imagine them...I just wish I couldn't.

Some Solo Bassists are a little over the top and seem in some competition with someone...cough Jeff Berlin.

Oh but it is! Haven't you seen Scott Pilgrim?

Bass battles do actually exist. I've competed. The rules are that you must keep in time with a drummer while you gradually get more quick-fingered (or picked) intense, and complicated, taking turns trying to stomp your opponent in either speed, technique, cleanness of the riff, etc. The winner is whoever can pull off the craziest stuff, while still keeping rhythm, retaining clean notes (less dead notes or screw ups wins in this respect), etc.

In my book, nothing that has to be judged can be called a sport.

Case in point: Figure Skating. The way it's set up now, it depends on judges' scores. It may be great art, but not a true sport. Now, if they were taking bets on whether or not she falls attempting the triple toe loop, then it becomes sport!

We should start a sport where people try to start the stupidest thread.

You should read this statement as if we're buddies having a beer, because I don't mean any harm.
But it truly is a horrible idea.
