1954 FENDER STRATOCASTER USA NECK PLATE | eBay

I mean, is anyone actually willing to pay this much for a piece of metal that you can buy for 2 bucks?

If the market didn't support it, it would not be offered. Its an insult of course but there are suckers out there waiting to spend money.....................

This ebay seller is dodgy!

They had a 70s gibson tuner i wanted to buy and they would net allow me to put a bid on!
I have more than 40 positive feedbacks and still they ignored my bid!
Sent them a few mails, got ignored, sent a few more mails and they put me on a black list!
No idea why i wasnt good enough for them, but i would stay away from them!

It's not.

Large difference between "asking" and "selling."

If talked to the most eccentric folks before who are prime candidates for buying something like this. I can just hear them now;
"I rebuilt this vintage strat with all original grossly overpriced parts! I even paid 1000 bucks for this neckplate!"
The only purpose the guitar will really serve is to show his friends how good he is at collecting vintage gear, and how good he is at spending his money. Clearly not the case for everyone, but often just a status thing.
Oh, and I like how it costs 25 bucks to ship that mortgage payment, ummmmmm... I mean neckplate.

I build parts basses out of no-name pieces because I am not rich. If I were obscenely rich, I'd probably build them out of one-of-a-kind parts like that. Notice that the neckplate is not "going" anywhere, by the way.

It's not the neckplate, it's the serial # someone is paying for.

It's there because it gives someone an opportunity to dishonestly peddle a parts bass as a vintage bass.

Not toooooo sure I can impute that motive, but it is a valid thought.

Just for fun, try to see if you can hear Lenny & Squiggy singing this "King Of The Cars" about product ID and custom parts::
