Why no GC in Cananda

Sign in to disble this ad
ya just outta curiosity, why is there no GC in Canada? I know it's a good thing because the private stores stay in business and I get better service that way but I can't help but wondering why a big billion dollar company wouldn't want to try and get business up North.

I have no idea. Since I live in Canada too, I've never even been to a Guitar Center. I'm pretty content with the stores I've been to, but don't have GC to compare them with.

As someone who works currently for a company that has a Canadian operation and has done so in the past, it is a very expensive time consuming proposition. They would have to set up a totally separate distribution center due to the tax structure, and a totally separate corporate operation. The pricing structure and distribution agreements would have to be renegotiated, for instance, a GC Canada would not have any presumed right to sell Fender or Markbass in Canada. It may happen at some point but it is a very time consuming process to set up.

LONG & MCQUADE.
Many of the product lines that GC would need to carry L&M already has exclusives on for the areas they're in (say downtown TO or Vancouver) and the wholesalers would be insane to pull them from one store to give them to CG...L&M would dump them from all their stores and that represents a lot of money. Probably not the only reason they're not up here but it's one big one for sure.

BTW jetpack, it's pronounciated Canadia

Most of them don't (and when they do they seem to only ship certain items). I think AMS does. We have to order from amazon.CA, which still only sells books, CDs, and DVDs.

I live in Vancouver and when I first visited GC in Seattle I was amazed at the amount of gear. Now I can walk through in about 15min, confirming they sell very little items I am interested in. Overall, I don't miss them here, L&M carries pretty much the same gear (and their staff is better, but still hit and miss at times).

I heard talk years ago from someone in the music retail business that they were gearing up to open in Canada. So far it hasn't got off the ground. For one thing, who wants to spend all that money to try to take on L&M? L&M is firmly established and their in store financing and rental business brings in a lot of customers. And they handle all the big name mass market gear.

Musician's Friend ships to Canada, IIRC, but not to Quebec. I'm hoping a Long&McQuade sets up shop around here, though I'm not holding my breath. We do have decent stores (Steve's) but nothing to rival Guitar Center.

It would be great to get one (a GC). Steve's needs some competition in the downtown area. They are really overpriced. And I'm always reluctant to shop there.

i'll suggest it to the higher-ups.

by the way, is Archambault still dealing in instruments? i don't see why they'd stop, but i haven't been to montreal in about 4 1/2 years. how is their pricing/service?

Archambault has a decent selection of what they carry, but they don't carry many brands. I like the fact that they have a lot of Fenders, but that's about it. Service is okay in the guitar/amps section, never had a problem. I know the piano section is a completely different story...
