The easiest answer, if you do gig, then you know why

Anything that causes strong feelings is addictive. It's a brain chemistry thing. Doesn't matter if it is pleasure or fear.

And gigging has a lot of both...

Creating/re-creating something you've worked so hard on, together with people you like (hopefully), in front of an appreciative crowd (again, hopefully) - priceless.

So true.
Also, there is a energy exchange between band members, and crowd.
This is real, and you feel it.
Plus, the fame, money, booze, and woman don't hurt either

#3) - Free Beer

#2) - Money

And the #1 reason that gigging is so darned addictive is.......

I get to go to my happy place (AKA "The Zone") for a few hours and escape the living hell that is my day to day existence.

You get to play tunes with more different people than if you just practice with your pals. Besides, most of the pianists, drummers and horn players I gig with have day jobs and do not just show up wanting to jam at the same time I want to jam.

You play tunes all the way through in the moment rather than stopping from time to time to make a suggestion or something. Doesn't have to happen that way all the time, but IME most get together and play sessions aren't dress rehearsals.

You can justify spending gig $$$ on (temporary) relief from GAS.

The action....the sense of team with your band...the sense of the whole being more than the sum of the parts...the vibe from the audience...

And you get to play pretty loud!

Must be primal....
