Why TalkBass WORKS!

Sign in to disble this ad
I was just sifting through the new threads during some downtime, and one thing occurred to me why TalkBass is such a great resource for bassists.

It's because we have a HUGE range of different interests all trading ideas and inspiration on here, all the way from the fourteen year old metal heads looking for the most "aggressive" sound to the fifty-plus guys seeking an "upright" tone for jazz standards. TB also has manufacturers chiming in providing insight and feedback, luthiers sharing construction techniques, and people posting links to videos that have opened my eyes to inspiring players I might have missed otherwise.

Anytime you get the chance to talk with guys who worked with Leo Fender, posting alongside the guys who think "Flea" is the epitome of bassdom, you're uniting together a huge spread of info.

That's why TB is such a great place, to me.

Too much of our media/infotainment these days is polarized and fragmented into small splinter groups that we only wind up just talking and listening to those who think just like ourselves (echo chamber syndrome). But here, we have a real wide open forum. You're gonna get exposed to people holding differing ideas about the instrument than your own, like it or not.

I think I'll re-up my supporting membership when I get some money back in PayPal.

Yup, diversity is a strength in any community. From the seasoned pro to the hobbyist and 12 year-old newbie to product engineers and anarchist-rebels; we're all here. Cool!

Agree that diversity is a huge strength in everything, as long as one can navigate around the turds in the punchbowl (those who need to dis on others because their tastes differ or they need to feel superior through typing, that type of diversity I can do without). Personally, I've made some connections with those I otherwise wouldn't who have inspired me, helped me out with issues and prayed for me when I needed it. All in all, TB is pretty cool...

And despite this we still don't know what the best bass for metal is.

I'm very unimpressed

It might be cool and all, but, for all of our research, we still don't know what the best bass for metal is...

I'm stoked I found this forum. I've learned more in the last couple of years than in the last 20 years.

Great, great stuff here.

And we STILL don't know which is better: a Jazz or a Precision! C'mon, guys, let's get to work on that.

Oh, by the way: the Precision is better.

I dig it, I have learned a lot since I've been comming here. Got turned on to some cool music I would have otherwised missed. Got exposed to new gear I would have never known about.

It has been a great tool in my evolution as a Bass player

Great post. Sure, as a result of that diversity, there's fussing and fighting here and I get involved in it myself from time to time (must stop ). But TB is an amazing resource. I learn from folks here every day, and not just about new gear to drool over--although that's part of it. I've also made real friends here in town and long distance through TB, and have been to a number of great GTGs.

TB is the place I spend the most time on the Internet and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

TB has an initial cost of $20 for the membership, but it has cost me thousands of dollars in unnecessary gear ever since

Ummm, YUP! I've bought/sold more basses in the 3 years that I've been here than in any other period of time since I got my first bass back in 79.

But seriously- this forum is amazingly helpful. I've had some great laughs, witnessed some amazing debates and learned a lot about gear-especially on the amp side of things. I'm pretty comfortable with what I know about basses, but I never even thought about buying an amp/cab stack and now I have 2 of them in addition to 2 combos!! (Theres that thousands of dollars in purchases again!)
