Why we, as bass players, rule.

Sign in to disble this ad
1. Less of an ego than frontmen or guitarists.

2. Less flaky than most drummers.

3. Basslines are almost the "invisible" component of a song--if you don't pay attention to them, you might miss them. BUT, without them, most songs would fall apart.

4. While most often in the background, it is the bassist that makes a song cohesive--filling the pocket between the melody and rhythm by being BOTH melodic and rhythmic. It's really two jobs in one.

5. IMO, a good, solid bassist drives the tempo and dynamics of a song. Moreso than the drummer. If you are a bassist and let the drummer call the shots on these issues, you gots to grow some more cajones.

6. Even if they aren't conscious of it, we all know that chicks find the big, bassy, vibrating bottom of a song super sexy.

...of course, these are largely generalizations and just meant for fun. I've known frontmen and lead guitarists who weren't big egomaniacs.

I've even known some drummers who weren't flakes with serious emotional baggage.

But still, bassists rock the most dope, hands down.

Anyone with me?

careful....

self importance is a form of ego in itself.

I've never been less than equal in anything that was worth my time. I'm lucky to have never dealt with all this band member hatred.

Aw geez...it's only meant for fun.

It's okay to gloat a little bit, ain't it?

Heck, I'm only a pretender at the moment...I've played bass for close to 30 years, but I haven't even owned on in almost 5 years. I'll be fixing that SOON though.

I've never dealt with a singer or guitarist with ego issues...I've never played with anyone I don't like! I feel that, if I was playing with someone I didn't get on with, the music would suffer as a result.

I think it was meant in fun, James. That's certainly how I took it.

Joe.

P.S. But the guy doesn't own a bass? At least he has good sense!

Considering how many times I hear guitar dudes say you only play the bass cause your a failed guitarist gives me the impression that "some" guitarists are all about ego.

And lead singers, ahhh "I don't need to rehearse, it all you guys that need the practice.

Bass player are the ones that sit up towars the back holding it all together with the drummer.

And they pick up the chicks.

I'm a frontman, too, so what does that make me?

And chicks just like it cause the low frequencies makes things vibrate.

I like to look at it from both sides.

First off, being bass players, we have seldon had to deal with the problems of other bass players. Not all of us are perfect. But granted, I have dealt with the egos of guitarists and singers, and yes drummers are flaky. From what I hear, bassists are supposed to be mellow. I guess that is true for me.

Being a bassist, you can be the least experienced, or least proficient member of the band and get away with it, without most of the audience even being aware. Granted, you need to play the right root notes and have to keep in time with the drummer, but a bassist can become a member of a rock band and appear to be half-decent faster than any other musician. Playing a simple bass line is MUCH easier than playing a simple rythmn guitar line or drum beat.

I'm down right cocky when it comes to playing
