Why you get GAS

Sign in to disble this ad
I know everybody has already thought about this, but, how many of the threads on this forum do you think are started by people are with marketing companies? Like the one about the Genz Benz Uber 410. It was started by an endorser, i.e. he markets their product. The body of it is smart enough to hint at sex ("My fiance' said it was hitting her in parts she doesn't even have.") and includes specs--just like good ad copy would. So, why do we spend so much of our time reading ads???

Commercial users- those who are directly paid by companies- are not allowed to start threads on products or advertise them.

Endorsing artists are different- they are not employees of the company, and generally just receive a discount on gear or possibly a free piece of equipment. These are folks that are usually sought out by the companies as they are already fans of their gear, and likely already speaking well of it.

However, if you find threads that read exactly like an advertisement even if they are only started by an endorsing artist, you may use the Post Report feature, and moderators will have a look at the thread to see if it falls into the blatant spam/schill category.

Why GAS?

Because we bassists just love bass gear. We can't seem to get enough of it!

I not only suffer from GAS, I also suffer from BASS (buy and sell stuff).

There is no known cure for these two debilitating diseases. And ya know what? I'm glad, because getting new stuff is fun! I won't be able to do it 100 years from now, so I will do it now! It's all good.

I honestly haven't GASsed in about six months after having my P bass totally redone. But lord almighty, I have the biggest urge to get a Steinberger right now.

It's pretty simple. Our culture bombards you 24-7 with ads that teach you to identify who you are with what you own. Unless your gear REALLY sucks GAS has very little to do with improving your ability to make music.

Bingo! Advertising - the art of getting people to buy stuff they don't really need, with money they shouldn't really spend.

When I was 35, I had more than 30 guitars & basses, a mess of drums & keyboards, and a more than adequate home studio. Now I'm 46, and I find myself selling off gear that doesn't get used regularly. I also find myself being more selective of the gear I do buy - I try & buy high-quality gear, and steer clear of the cheaper stuff. This is not to dis entry-level gear, and I'm not a gear snob, its just that I'd rather have a few really nice basses instead of a whole gaggle of mediocre ones.
