simple question...I've been playing for 4 years and it seems like I'll never be satisfied no matter what people around me tell me. So will I ever be happy with my playing?

No. You aren't supposed to.

Just keep getting better and better.

I never am. No matter how much I have accomplished, I am always thinking about what I still want to accomplish. Which, in turn, will make me a better bassist in the future.

if you thought you were a sufficient musician, you'd quit practicing, and then you'd get really bad.

Hey, she never had it to begin with!

Being down on yourself is not good, but wishing and working to be better is a good thing.

I think it is possible to find things about your playing that make you happy especially if you are continually trying to improve your technique. Set little goals (I want to learn my to slap - I need to add new scales to my vocabulary - develop your arpeggios, etc...), practice and achieve them and you can feel good about the progress you are making.

I've never been completely satisfied with my playing abilities, no matter which instrument it was. As was said, this leads to wanting to improve, which motivates you to practice and learn new techniques, which eventually will make you a better person.

I think the only people who would ever say they were 100% satisfied are the egos of the music world...you know the ones I mean. The musicians who are extremely gifted and let everyone know it by their behavior and attitudes.

So just keep playing and don't ever become an egotistical ***hole!!!
