I bought a brand new Sennheiser EW-172 system about a year ago on the Bay of E's for 400 bucks.

I did a lot of research before I made a purchase and I decided to go with Sennheiser because it got good reviews. It is a great system and I would definitely buy another one. I am a fairly "active" player on stage and the wireless system unleashed me.

I have discovered, however, that sometimes when you're walking through the crowd being cool, most people don't even know you're out there.

Yeah, that was my reason for getting one.
so far ive been involved with 3 conga lines while playing and each time had my bum pinched. best £99 i ever spent
I got myself an AKG Guitarbug system for £99 new in a local shop. i think they are quite cheap anyway and apart from the slight loss of bottom end and a boost to the top (enough to hear fret clamk with my usual settings) im very happy with it. I can just EQ the bottom back in and the top cuts trough nicely anyway. Battery seems to last for a round 3 gigs (3x50min set each) and the bug just sites on the front of my Jazz so no leads hanging out.
now that im used to using one i will be getting a more pro sounding unit but the AKG was worked out very well considering the cost.

Warning. I have had nothing but bad experiences with cheap wirelesses. Mine is a Sennheiser G2 and even it makes me nervous.... I always bring a cord and have a tech right there to patch me up if something goes wrong with it. Frustrating. It was like $600. Usually it's fine, but ya just can't trust em.

It really does depend on the size of gig your doing.
You hear people saying not to go near the cheaper ones but there are a lot of people using them without problems (me for instance).
Of course if your a pro doing large stages then of course you wont get a cheap one but for my bands (and i see a lot of other players on the circuit) the cheaper ones are fine. Unless it cuts out i can overcome the other facctors like tone change or lower signal. As it is not one of my band members have noticed any change in tone even though i know its there.
Just IMHO of course.

hey brother, i have an audio techinica rackmounted wireless unit that i too bought for that purpose and i must say that the freedom is awesome. it has the wireless pack itself with beltclip(about the size of a pack of smokes)and the cord is about a foot longwhat i usually do with it is attach the pack to my strap and route and wrap the wire thru my strap so it doesnt catch on anything. it is a vhf system that i bought used. the max range before cutting out signal is about 20-30 feet (line of sight)and about 8-10 feet around walls and such.i bought this in 96. the biggest complaint from everyone back then was that vhf didnt go the distance. so they started using uhf frequencies that allowed more freedom to roam. i never bought the new frequency but i have had my eye on this new one since it came out. it is uhf and has a small bud style antenna. no more pack to deal with. i havent bought it yet because i want to buy the roland v-bass that cannot go wireless. that would make the samson useless. hope my input helps. rock on.....

I used a Samson wireless from 1995-2005, between 70-110 shows a year. It was a rackmountable one that I bought for Cdn$650 back '95. I had it in the shop 2-3 times to fix "cold solder joints", I replaced the cable twice. It affected the sound somewhat, but the freedom was great. I replaced it last fall with a Shure ULXP system. This thing is NICE! You have a million frequencies to choose from and it will select the best one for you. I have not heard a taxi driver talk to my bass rig since I got it! It was a bit more expensive, but so worth it!

Another I was considering was the Samson Airline. A bass player I know bought one and put it through some testing and determine that the frequency response was actually better than advertised. I can't remember the number, but it went lower than we expected. I think the little trasmitter is a great idea. The lead singer in my old band also played guitar. She used an acoustic, 12-string electric, 6 string electric and mandolin. Changing instruments was so quick with this thing. No need to look for cables, just grab the little transmitter and throw it in the next guitar.
