Unhappy Wolfmother disbanded!

One of Australia's most successful rock exports, the Grammy-winning trio Wolfmother, has been torn apart by "longstanding frictions," according to a statement published on the group's Web site on Thursday.

Bass/keyboard player Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett have resigned, while singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale plans to find other musicians and begin making a new Wolfmother album.

"Please understand that in spite of their best efforts over a long period of time, they just could not find a harmonious way to work together," the statement said.

Wolfmother's self-titled debut album, released in 2006, sold more than 500,000 copies in the United States, powered by radio airplay for the songs "Woman" and "Joker and the Thief."

The group won a Grammy in the hard rock category last year, becoming the first Australian band to pick up the music industry's top honors since Men at Work in 1983.

However, all was evidently not well behind the scenes. According to the statement, Ross decided he would quit the band because of "irreconcilable personal and music differences" following a show in the eastern Australian town of Byron Bay on Sunday. Heskett also decided to leave rather than continuing as part of a changed lineup.

The pair had been working together on songs for some time and plan to focus their energies on that new project, the statement said.

It's a shame as they put out one heck of a near perfect CD. It did become old quickly though to me, still a great effort and throw back sound.

What a bunch of idiots. What are the chances of them putting together another successful project? They must think it grows on trees.

Mike Patton is most famous for his work with Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk etc. He's a pretty frigging good musician. Interesting dude.

Also very vocal about his hatred for Wolfmother, and the influx of Throwback-Rock that got popular a couple years ago... Look for it on Youtube.

Having seen Fantomas in concert I can't think of a better example of a talented person (based on his FNM work) completely throwing it all away than Mike Patton. Wolfmother managed to create an entire album's worth of good songs. Patton hasn't done that in 20 years.

Just an opinion of mine, but at least Patton's consistently tried to do something different with all of his numerous side projects (Tomahawk is very different from Fantomas, which is very different from Loveage, which is very different from Mr. Bungle etc.) rather than just recycle an albums' worth of old AC/DC riffs.

But, having said that, I could see why people would find a great deal of Patton's non-FNM stuff to be a mite less accesible than his previous efforts.

Yeah, no big loss IMO. All they did was rehash something that came and went 30 years ago. "Mother" = 2:15 of low-grade LedZep ripoff.

Mike Patton is a friggin genius. Yeah his stuff is weird and obnoxious, but most cutting edge music is. It's the opposite of the syrup being played on the radio.

All music is pretty much recycled now. It's just the combination and vibe of the project.

Like Vampire Weekend sounds fresh right now, even though it's just rehashed combination a Ska, Reggie & the Police. Just market timing, clever hooks and playing with conviction.

It's all about degrees and combinations. Wolfmother, although good at what they do, doesn't change, combine, or contribute anything to music in a forward thinking way. Their tracks could literally be hidden within old albums from the 70s and most people wouldn't be able to pick them out. Not to say there's no merit to this, it's just not something a lot of people are particularly interested in. In the same way that many people aren't interested in more forward thinking, avant-garde, type musicians such as Mike Patton (I hesitate here, because although interesting and one of my favorite vocalists, he's actually not THAT strange).

I dig Wolfmother. I like the throw back style music. I feel it has more of a raw heart and soul type vibe to it unlike alot of other new music of today. I like to be able to hear what the vocalist is singing and what the instruments are playing. Jet also has that type of feel IMO.

I hope that was sarcasm speaking. If the only reason someone is playing music is to be "successful" at it, I think they're doing it for the wrong reason.
