Women in Jazz who don't sing?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been thinking about this for a couple days now, and for the most part I've drawn blanks. The only people I can think of are Mimi Fox, Hiromi Uehara, and Emily Remler (who is gone). Does anyone know any others? Any instrument is fine, so long as they don't sing.

There's the Japanese pianist Hiromi - I love her playing on Stanley Clarke's "Jazz in the Garden"!

I know several Jazz pros in the UK who are women : Paul Gardiner plays Double Bass and leads her own bands with her own original compositions.

Nikki Iles is a great pianist and composer, Zoe Rahman is another who leads her own bands and has won Jazz awards in the UK. Another bass player is Alison Rayner, who plays both BG and Double Bass.

For bass players - how about Tal Wikenfeld - lots of discussion around here and some of the tracks I've seen with Jeff Beck are certainl Jazz Fusion if not straight ahead Jazz..?

I know more Sax players in the UK who are women - Ingrid Laubrock has lead her own Jazz groups and won awards ...

Oh yes how could I forget Eliane Elias, with Steps Ahead and since!!??

There's another great drummer/percussionist who played with Miles and more recently, Jan Garbarek :

Marilyn Mazur : http://www.marilynmazur.com/

Myra Melford, Connie Crothers, Miki Hayama, Claire Daly, Liz Gorrill, Regina Carter, Deanna Witkowski, Mary Ann McSweeney, Tomoko Ohno, Francesca Tankesly, Michelle Rosewoman, Anat Cohen, Sylvia Cuenca, Elise Woods, Jamie Baum, Peggy Stern, Joanne Brackeen, Maria Schneider, Janelle Reichman, Melba Liston. That should keep you busy for a minnit.

There are a couple of trumpet players I'm missing, woman who's frist name is Rebeccah, she did some gigs with Virginia Mayhew when they were first starting out up here. And a couple of drummers. Oh, Cindy Blackman. But a couple more. There's bassists I haven't heard, pianists I haven't heard etc. Basically your whole panoply of instruments.

There's a lotta women who play.

Oh please. If you were REALLY enlightened you wouldn't be trying to marginalize them by talking about their looks. Pretty much anybody in here is playing at a level thats' gonna make your head spin...

Believe me Ed, I didn't mean anything of the sort when I said that. Just a comment I decided to throw in. If you feel it is offensive I apologize for that, because I really didn't mean to take away from their ability by saying what they said.

If it matters, when I said "lovely" I only meant lovely in the sense of their playing ability (which I'm going to assuming must be good if anyone's going to mention them), and not their looks.

Not to unduly flog, but is that really the way that you would describe the playing of Scott Colley or Elvin Jones?
