I recently joined a gym. I've only gone about 6-7 times thus far, but I'm really digging it. I'm glad, I was worried I was going to hate it, but aches and pains aside, it's totally radical, perhaps to the max.
Anyways, of course I've got my MP3 player with me, and I'm looking for suggestions of what I should listen to through finding what others listen to.
My obvious rock choices are: Motorhead, MC5, AC/DC, High on Fire, The Misfits, Clutch, Dio, Dozer, Monster Magnet, and Big Business. But my choices are not limited to hard rock type stuff.
I'm really liking Can's "Monster Movie" album, it's really rhythmically driving. Strangely, also some Ash Ra Tempel and Kraftwerk as well, despite being laid back, it kind of helps me keep going for cardio stuff. A lot of electronica as well: Autchre, Aphex Twin, Daedelus, Proem, and Squarepusher.
I guess what I go for personally is a driving rhythm and being of a somewhat repetitious nature.
What do you folks listen to whilst pumping zee iron.

It's amazing how much weight I can lift when I'm angry.
Truthfully, I don't listen to music when weight lifting. I like to focus on what I'm doing, and using proper technique.
For cardio I can listen to almost anything without it affecting my pace, though I find that really rhythmic stuff works best. Like you I've used Krautrock, but it's normally Neu! that I put on. Hip Hop works well for me too. |

For cardio, tempo is much more important. Techno/drum-and-bass stuff is great, because it's usually a consistent, long track. Stuff like Roni Size, DJ Shadow, and Aphex Twin (mentioned in OP) work great. You can also use software to make slower/faster versions of techno stuff, without changing it sound that much. You'll find that if you "step" to the beat of the music, and breathe along with your steps, consistently, you'll have a more effective workout.

As for fueling a hard spinning workout; Pretenders, Clash, Sex Pistols and basically anyone else that might of played CBGB in the late 70's. Longer grind on the stationary bike and I'll lose myself in either old country or the blues.
Once the glaciers leave Wisconsin come spring, then it is just the stuff in my head when the bike hits the road. That seems so far away.

Anything's fair game for me, from rock to classical to big band swing. I find melodic metal that's fast like Iron Maiden to be really fun to work out with though. |
