Who cares?!! I hate it when art is rated by how much money it makes. Same as movies, when they show the Top Ten grossing movies of the year and they all have numbers after their name.

Its because the majority of people can't think for themselves or even recognize art. They need something tangible like a sports score to compare things to. Failing that, they need a surrogate judge who they can kind-of relate to to tell them what their opinion is.

Sad but true. Target the lowest common denominator and you'll make plenty of money, but very little art. Seems to be the way of things these days.

It really bothers me that anyone except the studios give a crap how much a film grosses. This started to become common a long time ago (1970's, around the Star Wars era?) and has seemed normal since. Why this should be news outside of the business pages is a mystery to me.

We have become complicit in reducing the value of all things to a monetary one.

Music is a business and that people would want to know what's going on in the business is no shocker. What bugged me about the list is that it's not really about how much people are making BY MAKING MUSIC. Dr. Dre heads the list not with music sales or concert tickets but because his headphones are selling well. Some of the others are up there because they made smart (or lucky) investments with earnings from PAST music.

Yep. I heard a old studio producer say once on a documentary, "the first time Entertainment Tonight started posting stats on "weekend profits" for movies, it all went down hill very quickly. As you say, this was in the mid-70's, and since then, major Hollywood studio's wouldn't know what to do with an original idea if it came out of their ass.

Music is no different. I couldn't care less about how much money anyone's making, but you hear it all the time - how many "units" the latest halfwit 17 year old sold. Personally, I blame music videos, and MTV. When someone like Mariah Carey (a truly appalling singer) can sell millions of albums without ever having performed live, it makes me sick. Sadly, I don't see things getting any better. The first time some clown lip-synced to a song on a "live" performance, Rock and Roll took a huge king hit.

Did you know that the french best paid artist for 2011 was.... (hum hum... i'm coughing sorry) David Guetta ? with (hum hum still coughing sorry) 3.12 millions € !!!! yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah !!!!!!

France is ... again... an example when it comes to speak about reasonable incomes and cheapy but so cooooool life !

I was lucky enough to spend 4 weeks in France on tour - very cool place indeed. And I'm sure you could live very well there for 3 million Euros a year!!
