Worst hits by the coolest bands

Sign in to disble this ad
listening to the radio always angers me because they keep playing my favorite bands, but they seem to be intentionally selecting the worst songs by those bands.

Jethro Tull-Bungle in the Jungle
This one stands out the most. I can't understand the logic in choosing this song for radio play. "Well, let's see, after that we could play a Tull song! Let's see, we could play Locomotive Breath......no, nevermind, nobody likes that one .....how about Bungle in the Jungle?!"

Sublime-Wrong Way
I might be alone on this one, I don't know, but I can't see how this one is popular, yet nothing off of 40oz. to Freedom is ever on the radio. 40oz. is one incredible song after another. Wrong Way is goofy clown music.

The Grateful Dead-Touch of Grey
speaks for itself.

That's my list.

The Police - Just about anything off of "Synchronicity." Pure self-indulgent pabulum.

Disagree. I think Every Breath You Take and King of Pain are brilliant pop songs.

Cheap Trick - The Flame (a bad power ballad)
The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You (another bad power ballad)
R.E.M. - Shiny Happy People (just bad)

I like a lot of 'Synchronicity' especially Copelands drumming.

"We built this city" by Jefferson Airplane (Starship). In general, the '80s made some really good bands sell out and "adapt" to the times. Lots of cheese was produced.

BTW, I love Synchronicity too. "King of Pain," "Wrapped around your fingers," and "Tea in the Sahara," are all great, timeless songs.

I knew there'd be disagreement. I simply can't stand that album. To each his own.

I remember running to the store and buying Synchronicity the day it came out, putting it on the turntable when I got home, and being almost devastated at how badly it sucked.

i'm with you on sublime... the self-titled album just isn't as good as 40oz of freedom, the "hits" feel so repetitive.

i love synchronicity along with most the police's music...

and i like "the flame," too, by cheap trick even though i would probably opt to put on heaven tonight or the first album or at budokan before playing anything from the latter stages of their career.

while i don't hate it, i'm always a little disappointed by the fact that most people know black sabbath only by "iron man" since they have so much great music, anything off of master of reality or vol 4 or sabotage being the equal of that song.

i hate "nothing else matters" and am cool about the other "hits" from black album... i'd rather hear anything off any of the other previous albums.

i dunno, that's what comes to mind at the moment.

"Whip It" by Devo is a pretty unfortunate song to be a hit. I'm not a big Devo fan, but they produced so many better, smarter and funnier songs than this. This is song is Splenda to the sweet sugar of the rest of their catalog.

Since we just finished the Christmas holiday, I'll offer Sir Paul's "Wonderful Christmastime". Surely his worst moment. I'm delighted to say I only heard it once this year! Last year it was once an hour.
What's with that echo crap anyway? Sounds like a mixing mistake to me.

PS loved "Whip It"!

If I'm not mistaken, "The Flame" wasn't even written by Cheap Trick, it was written by Michael Bolton, of all people. The band hated it, and refused to play it live for a long time, even though it was a big hit for them.

"Wonderland" by Big Country. After bangers like Fields of Fire and In a Big Country, "Wonderland" just didn't aim high enough.

I like some of them, just not Wrong Way.

I guess the 40 oz stuff wasn't radio material because the compositions were too original. That, of course, is part of why I think 40 oz is one of the best studio disks ever recorded.

Although not the "coolest" band by my standards, I would have to say The Offspring - "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" and "Why don't you get a job"...basically everything past "Ixnay on the Hombre" was an abomination.

Our alternative rock station plays a few things from "40 oz." all the time, especially "Smoke Two Joints" and "Date Rape". And the reason they play "Wrong Way" is because a lot of people like it, including me. Maybe it's not the very best Sublime, but for most people it's the song that got them into Sublime in the first place.

But I agree that most of the Police's "Synchroncity" is bad, pretentious stuff.
