If you were to see a Zeppelin tribute band, would you rather see and hear them play the studio versions of the songs, or the live versions. No 1/2 and 1/2.
Feel free to elaborate on why also. Thanks. |

Both times were in a crappy Midwest hockey arena deep in their tours. I'm sure their shows in LA or NYC were much better shows.

She listens their live stuff, especially Earl's Court, more to get the Plant-esque delivery down.

In most cases, the studio version is the version I've listened to for the most part and the version I like, and the version who's solo I know note-for-note. In some cases I like hearing my favourite song changed up a bit, but it's rare.
That's one thing about Hendrix actually which made me like Clapton more as a guitarist. Hendrix never played the same song twice. I cannot find a live version of Red House that trumps the studio recording. I've heard several great ones, but the solos were never ever the same, sometimes the tempos were slower or faster, etc. I enjoy listening to renditions, but ultimately I want to hear what I know and love.

Honestly, I think you should make the songs your own. Some of the songs should be close to the originals... and then make your own "arrangements" of the others. If you are a "tribute band" you should keep the spirit of LedZep in there, but put your own spin on it.
If you were in a KISS tribute band, and were doing the makeup and the whole nine yards.... I'd feel differently. |

If you've ever seen Rush live you know that they try to recreate their studio versions of their songs as much as possible, but that "as much as possible" leaves room for a certain "liveness" that makes Rush such a terrific live act.

(hey, you said you want every single TBer to vote)
Honestly, I would never go see a tribute band. I don't like when people try to be something or someone they are not. It reminds me of all the years I spent trying to be someone I wasn't because other people thought I should. It is painful to think of the time I wasted and where I might be today if only I had chosen to follow my dreams earlier and more consistently in life.
If you are a musician and you really like Led Zeppelin that's cool, get with a band and play some Zep covers. But for God's sake be yourselves and do it your own way. Make your own art.
Led Zeppelin were great but they are gone and I'm fine with that. There's current stuff that is just as great though if you listen. But that's a whole different thread and not likely a pretty one so I'll end this post right here. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
