If you were to see a Zeppelin tribute band, would you rather see and hear them play the studio versions of the songs, or the live versions. No 1/2 and 1/2.

Feel free to elaborate on why also. Thanks.

Live for sure. Led Zep recordings can't be topped, IMO.

Studio version. I saw them live twice and other than the great party I never felt they sounded very good and the show wasn't that good.

Both times were in a crappy Midwest hockey arena deep in their tours. I'm sure their shows in LA or NYC were much better shows.

Probably the studio version as it will ebb and flow live anyway...

I wouldn't directly copy the live versions note for note, but you should change up the studio version a bit, just enough to keep it interesting.

Studio versions for me. IMO many artists cannot improve upon what they did in the studio live. Of course there are exceptions... such as Springsteen.

Studio versions. Why? Led Zeppelin II, cranked, doing eighty on the 10 with the windows down on a warm summer night. That's why.

My girlfriend sings for a Zep tribute band... while i was never a fan, she grew up with the stuff.

She listens their live stuff, especially Earl's Court, more to get the Plant-esque delivery down.

I usually always prefer the studio version of any song. In most cases, the studio version is the version I've listened to for the most part and the version I like, and the version who's solo I know note-for-note. In some cases I like hearing my favourite song changed up a bit, but it's rare.

That's one thing about Hendrix actually which made me like Clapton more as a guitarist. Hendrix never played the same song twice. I cannot find a live version of Red House that trumps the studio recording. I've heard several great ones, but the solos were never ever the same, sometimes the tempos were slower or faster, etc. I enjoy listening to renditions, but ultimately I want to hear what I know and love.

given the parameters, and thinking of what would actually work, I'd say studio - but selfishly I'd dig a Zep band to do something completely different and creative w/ the tunes . . . my 2¢

I voted "live", but I LOVE live music. I think the "masses" will prefer studio. That's what they know.....

Studio versions, please. I think the goal of a good band should be to reproduce their studio songs as accurately as possible when playing them in concert.

Studio for the most part but make a couple songs your own.

I play in blues/classic rock cover band.

Honestly, I think you should make the songs your own. Some of the songs should be close to the originals... and then make your own "arrangements" of the others. If you are a "tribute band" you should keep the spirit of LedZep in there, but put your own spin on it.

If you were in a KISS tribute band, and were doing the makeup and the whole nine yards.... I'd feel differently.

I voted live. It's called "live" for a reason. If you've ever seen Rush live you know that they try to recreate their studio versions of their songs as much as possible, but that "as much as possible" leaves room for a certain "liveness" that makes Rush such a terrific live act.

I voted live because it was losing the race at the time I voted.

(hey, you said you want every single TBer to vote)

Honestly, I would never go see a tribute band. I don't like when people try to be something or someone they are not. It reminds me of all the years I spent trying to be someone I wasn't because other people thought I should. It is painful to think of the time I wasted and where I might be today if only I had chosen to follow my dreams earlier and more consistently in life.

If you are a musician and you really like Led Zeppelin that's cool, get with a band and play some Zep covers. But for God's sake be yourselves and do it your own way. Make your own art.

Led Zeppelin were great but they are gone and I'm fine with that. There's current stuff that is just as great though if you listen. But that's a whole different thread and not likely a pretty one so I'll end this post right here.
