Part of a conversation that I had with a friend. Suppose a member of your favorite band quit and there was a public announcement that there were to be open auditions for a new member.
Would you even try for the auditions? Or would the fact of it being your fave band put you off?

Geddy: ACK, I need a replacement Bass player, eh!!
Me: Don't worry, Geddy... It is MY DESTINY!
That's when I wake up.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't get the gig but you still have a once in a lifetime experience. |

...as the drummer, then I wouldn't suck.

There was a time that I learned 'EVERY' song by The Rippington's just hoping Kim Stone (bassist at the time) would quit! They were my favorite contempo jazz band for many years! I stayed current on new material for years until I lost interest due to the quality of the songwriting going downhill.
I currently do not have a band I like so much I'd like to play for them. |

I wouldn't go in expecting to get the job, just to have a good experience and learn something. Even if it's learning what my weaknesses are. So I wouldn't be crushed if I didn't get the gig, but it would be a great surprise if I did.

Occasionally a band does something public and notorious like INXS and the Pumpkins did - but IME a person making their first contact at an audition is usually working against a big disadvantage.
Fassa, to continue your example, think about how Gary Husband got the Level 42 gig. He had been playing with Holdsworth, who was on Guaranteed, and they made the connection that way. Don't you imagine there had to be 500 badass drummers in London alone who would have killed for the gig and would have nailed it?
If a huge global band - let's say Dave Matthews - did a public audition for a bass player, damn right I'd audition if I had the chance. But I bet Dave would already have a good idea of who he wanted. Just keeping it real. |

In other words, the Sammy Hagar conundrum. |
