Sign in to disble this ad
Im going crazy seeing all these good basses on my local auction site going cheap , Fenders , Warwicks etc . I already have 2 good basses which satisfy all my needs , but i cant help be tempted to buy everything that comes up .....which will not go down well with the wife AND be a unjustifiable hoard , apart from not looking at the auctions anybody got any tips to overcome this obsession ?

Why not? If they're affordable and look interesting, go for it. Sell any you decide not to hang onto.

Yup, right now that would be the only reason. If I knew I could get them at a stupid cheap price and I could potentially double that price a year or more down the road, why not?

Yeah, if you have the cash, taking advantage of those deals is a fun pastime and a good learning experience. It galls me to see all the amazing deals out there these days, when I'm in the exact same boat financially as the poor saps who are selling their gear for cheap.

Plus, you never know what will tickle your fancy. Just recently I bought a no-name parts bass with a fake Warlock body, just because I thought it looked rawk and it was super cheap--and it turned out to play great and sound great! Ya never know.

There's several advantages here: you may learn more of the complexities of different instruments, you may learn good construction and repair techniques, and you may profit or at least learn the market trends of varied brand names. Always remember: buy low - sell high (and NO I'm not condoning rape and pillage)

Yes!!

I rented a MIM Jazz for $14 (one month) while my Precision was having the electronics repaired. It wasn't a bad bass and I thought it was time to get a backup as our band was gigging, so when the month was up I called the music store and asked what it would cost to buy the bass (which was brand new, I was the first person to rent it). I was quoted $180 less my $14 rental fee, and they would throw in the hardshell case I took it home with because "there was no dollar value indicated for it on the rental form".

So, I bought a brand new MIM Jazz with a hardshell case for $166.

Yes as long as it plays well if I keep it or can at least get what I paid for it if I sell it and lastly good enough for student use if I decide to donate it

Cheap is relative.

Would I buy a $1000 bass for $500?

Oh heck no. Unless it was something i really wanted, like a USA Jackson.

Would I buy a $200 bass for $20?

Oh HELL yes.

I've bought and sold quite a bit. I want to believe for some reason that it is a problem, but I have fun with it and have made a bit of money doing it over the years.

One thing that I have found though is that I will never keep the cheap basses. Knowing that there is a better one out there will always prevent me from fully enjoying it and holding on to it. It's the "grass is always greener" syndrome.

i bought a squier pbass off ebay for $110 shipped.
it was a '92 MIK.
i felt horrible, because i bought it on impulse.
it had 1 minute left, $99 current bid, i won it for $101.
i just finished redoing it and it sounds and looks amazing.
i could easily sell it twice what i paid for it.
but i really like it, i dont think i can part with it now, maybe later.

By the way...I bought that 1976 Precision about 15 years ago for $100 after talking the guy down from $120. At the time I had no internet and thought it was worth about $300 because it was "road-worn". Was I ever wrong!!

Once I got the Precision, I sold an Aria for $250 that I bought a few years prior for $150. I've been very lucky!!

That's how all three of my current basses came to be mine.
Fender BG-31- Acoustic bass. I thought it was cool. $100 w/ case; Christmas gift.
Squier Precision- $100 at GC, used; Christmas money burnin' a hole in my pocket.
SX Fretless Precision- $100. Again, Christmas gift.

Just because they're cheap!
