Writing/playing/feeling too agressively, ever have that problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
actually playing I'm slightly more mellow, but overall lately I'm hearing things along the lines of "your too agressive" or "gotta be more mainstream" or whatever from a few folks/friends since I started composing electronically (since thats the most I've done in a while out of my slump).
I hear these things, and it's cool and all, but moreover it's not really "me" in my style I don't think. like these days I'm just sort of sick of listening to radio cuz some of the stuff on there is ....just unattractive to me. I gave an EP of a release I did a month or two back to a prof of mine, and he was like "well, it was really good, but the one thing I don't think you'll ever lack in it is relentlessness." ever just have that problem where you wanna go beyond? I really wanna please people, but I'm not gonna be writing coffee-jingle tunes anytime soon to make that dough. Anyways, here's one of my joke tunes I actually wrote to "compete" with a buddy of mine on "how closely we follow the petrucci psycho speed lessons" (y'know, with the overdubs talking about how godly he is?).

BE WARNED: WANKARIFFIC LINES

I ahve no clue what ppsl is, nor does that tune play. I get nothing but 12 seconds of quiet.

Avant-garde!?

Hey, let me just say this; while it is part our role to please the peeps, it is also our job to be true to our artistic vision. When I craft my bass lines. which folks dig I guess, it done ONLY with the groove (drums), the vocals and guitar in mind. I dont allow my ego in the mix, I try and honor the music with a righteous bassline. I do ask my mates opinions, but they dont seem to wnat to be devil's advocate and just say " TIGHT".

Dont be too focus on what people think, defer yourself to Mother Music, be a lightening rod for her to speak through you, and from that perspective you'll be focs on the groove, the music. Everything else will eventually fall in place.

I'd guess that the folks you are letting judge you really arent qualified to do so.

Why are you bothered by it then? Nobody can be you but you. Only you know if you are being true to the music. Can you dig that?

Ok, my speakers were off. Son, that isnt music. Its a jackhammer.

I have a drag race engine that idles with more groove than that. Truly, it isnt a joke. Its actually really sweet sounding and has more "music" in it than the clip. A nice steady syncopated " Hot for Teacher" drum roll. You can hear the cylinders firing in a circle. The extrmem exhaust velocity "rings' the pipes.

And since I'm comparing the clip to a 525 hp 427 Chevrolet, it isnt a good critique.

you can FEEL my engine idle. It has a rhythm. I can feel anything there at all.

rhythm's the ability to count and compound different timings...but on the other hand, i do get you.....more variation of rythms other than straight 16ths/8ths/whatev. but yea, that was just one of my screwaround tracks......

I think the fact is I'm bothered by the fact that I "supposedly" released one album, and looking at all the material, it's been enough for me to say today "look, I'm takin it 'off the market' remixing, remastering, shortening, and re-releasing it because it's F***ing pathetic". as far as the machine gun blasts.....yea, that's "my thing" .....i think my patience while i'm writing is showing, i gotta do somethin like put in a breakdown or something.....cuz when i hear other "machine" bands, the exact groove concept I'm missing is what they have, and the technicality i put into my schtick is what bars them from being me....time for some doodling, or actual writing on manuscript

the bass end was being covered by a buzz generator plugin rather than actual bass.....the only thing i can deduce is that somewhere along the line before i showed you guys this track is i got bored and started messing around with other patches....cuz i remember the instrumentation was two guitars and a bass.
