Yellowjackets tomorrow! UPDATED

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, tomorrow I make the 5 hour drive (one way) to see the Yellowjackets. Jimmy Haslip is a big influence. I'll also get to hear new (old, actually) drummer Will Kennedy.

Aside from the drive, it's supposed to be HOT and humid. 90+ degrees. They play at 6:00 so hopefully it will cool down a touch and the severe weather that tends to happen in the evening after a hot, humid day wll stay away long enough for them to het their set in.

My favorite band. I've seen them all over the world, and more times than any other band. They never disappoint, and Jimmy is the MAN!

I'd love to see the Yellowjackets. They've never done a show close enough to me, that I could go see them. Some day hopefully. Enjoy the show.

Quick story about Jimmy and company. I went to see them in Minneapolis, MN. I posted on Jimmy's forum a few days before the gig that we were making the 4+ hour (one way) trip to hear them and if they could do Motet which was my favorite tune at the time that would be awesome. he said he'd see what he could do. Well, the 3rd song of the set was Motet and he played a KILLER solo. I talked with him after and said I was Steve from North Dakota and the first thing he said was we played it for you. It was amazing.

I'm really long forward to the get away and gig - long drive and all. It will give me a chance to actually do some listening for a change.

This will be the 4th gig for me. They actually played in Grand Forks a few years ago. We tried to start a jazz festival on Labor Day weekend, but so many people leave town for the lakes around here it didn't fly. Lasted about 4 years. Needless to say I was hooked from then on.

Kennedy is back with the band?!?
The last time I saw them (many years ago)...Kennedy stole the show (hard to do with those guys, right?).

Yep - has been since earlier this year. I saw them here in Tokyo with Will. He was amazing, as always!

UPDATE

Just got back from the show. Amazing. Will Kennedy can play drums! Got to say hi to all the guys after - rode the elevator with Russ and Will. Great guys. Very down to earth considering who they are.

I need a 6 string bass - and LOTS of practice!

Sorry Pacman, I just can't afford yours :-)

You should buy it - you'll end up with one at least as expensive sooner or later

If you want to make me an offer, maybe we can talk...

Steve -

Glad you enjoyed the show! I hope my hometown hosted you well, and thanks for coming down. It sure was hot enough, wasn't it? Glad the heavy weather held out and the show went on.

Had a great time. Didn't even think of checking for Sioux Falls TB'ers. Now to find time to practice.

Just found out Will was back. It's about time. Just wasn't the same without him. Amazing drummer, blows me away every time.

Last time I saw them was at Blues Alley in DC a long time ago... the only way you could find a more intimate setting would be to have them play in your den. I mainly went to see Jimmy, sat less than six feet from Will and was mesmerized by the combination of finesse, power and imagination. The recordings blew me away, live was way beyond that.

They'll be playing at the Jazz Festival in Cape May, NJ, the second weekend in November!
