Simple enough.
Are you the best musician in your band? Provide proof in the form of a link to a song if you need to.
I am not the best musician in my band. Our guitarist is a musical genius who can play any instrument you put in front of him, write a brilliant song a day if he wanted to, and has perfect pitch. He can hear a song he has never heard, and pick up an instrument and play it. Then there's my drummer. I have no business playing with him. Listen to the song "Second of Six" on our myspace page for proof. |

When I do happen to find myself in a band it is almost always with musicians that are at least as good as me |

| | | I say yes because I had to teach them stuff. The only thing I didn't know were guitar chords but they had a chart. But yeah I sound better and play better. No offense to my band by the way.

I have tried many a time to beat such nonsense out of him, but am unsuccessful as of yet.

So unless you're Victor Wooten playing with some garage band "best" is meaningless. As far as musicianship, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Pretty hard to compare unless you want to break it down further. For pure soloing chops/speed I guess I am the best. For technical knowledge and understanding how chords work together it's my guitar player. For solid backup and occasional bursts of genius it's the keyboards.

But, with the bands I've played. I played with a pop/rock band that didn't know what a scale was and the drummer was really really meh....
I played in a band with good friends of mine in which I'd say everyone was approximately equal but if I needed to put an order I'd put myself in the last position. The two guitarists are brothers that are very very good shredders that practice near 3 hours per day and the drummer was a natural talent (extremely tight and technical). We were some kind of prog metal band.

| | That's the way uh huh uh huh I like it.. | | Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Robbinsville, NJ | | it depends... some things I do better than everyone else, other things they do better than me. Our singer for instance is a great songwriter, better than I'll ever be and can play a whole bunch of instruments convincingly well, on the other hand he's not a virtuouso on any of them by a long shot. If you're talking single instrument capabilities in comparison, then I'm better in that way. Overall ability to play various instruments, he kills me. So, my vote is "carrots"....even though there is no option as there should be per TB unwritten absolute rules!

So in that perspective I'm the least pro, and I'm probably the one with the most limitations in terms of skills. At least on bass, but I do the lead vocals as well and I guess I'm actually a better vocalist than bassist. We've gotten great feedback on all our gigs so far (only 4 or 5 so far but anyway) and the band members have told me they enjoy playing with me.
In the reggae band, I guess it's fair to say I'm the "best" musician, having way more experience from various bands than the other musicians. That band is way more amateurish in many ways than the cover band, and I've been thinking about leaving it several times. The drummer is actually the same as in the cover band, but he is 10 years younger than me (I'm 30) and although he is rock-solid and studies music full-time now I still have more experience than him. He will pass me in a couple of years though, definitely. He only need to practice songs more, now he seems to think it's ok if you know the beat of the song and improvise the rest...
