You know you're a good bassist when you can play...

1. a fretless bass (I'm not a good bassist)
2. many jazz tunes (including improvising)
3. Victor Wooten licks

I think all that stuff comes second to groove and pocket playing/connection with the rythm section.

Well, this is good to hear. I've considered myself a mediocre bassist, but I choose to play my fretless over my fretted bass. Perhaps by htotheh's view, I'm better than I think. Thank you htotheh.

in time, in tune, with a healthy taste for pocket and groove.

This is so cool. when i read the title to this thread i expected to see a lot of songs and really fast licks.
But the posts show that the people here are real musicians who have realized that there is more than showing of.

-just a random thought.

i think you are a good bassist when you can make other musicians sound good.
