Sign in to disble this ad
build your own dream jazz standards band....

for those of us that play jazz im sure we are all familiar with the "gig that never ends" be it a party or a wedding, where you just rock up and play standards for 3 or 4 hours......

i was thinking wouldnt it be cool to see the world's best do a workingman's gig, a throw together, no prior rehearsal, 3-4 hour standards and modern standards jam/gig! playing everything from rhythm-a-ning to love for sale to all blues, everybody's party, giant steps etc..... all the tunes you would pull to make the 4 hours through!

the rules of selection are;
all players must be currently alive.
the band must be able to function on the porch of a house party, on a theatre stage or a festival event.

the band i would pull together would be:
drums: bill stewart
bass: john pattitucci (on upright)
piano: herbie hancock
guitar: wayne krantz
tenor: chris potter
alto: graeme lyall
trumpet: roy hargrove

i think they could handle it............

Pattituci? Seriously?

drums: Tony Williams (I'd honestly like to hear Derrick Mckenzie try it, IDK I really liked his early drumming, I think he could pull it off)
bass: Ray Brown
piano: Thelonious Monk or Herbie Hancock...
guitar: Django Reinhardt
baritone: Freddie Cuber
tenor: John Coltrane
alto: Paul Desmond or Cannonball Aderly I couldn't choose
trumpet: Clifford Brown
violin: Stephane Grappelli

Honorable Mention: NHOP, Herbie Hancock, Mingus, DEXTER GORDON!!, I wanted him at Tenor so bad, Art Blakey

Since the rules state all players must be alive, I can't come up with a list

where would you jam? in a graveyard?

i really like JP's upright playing... he is a thinking musician, when i watching play upright im constantly trying to get inside his head thinking what he'll do next or seeing his interaction with soloists, makes for interesting viewing as apposed to just having good solid lines. he has those too.

I'd rather see Paul Motion in that seat...

Keys: Herbie Hancock or Keith Jarrett
Bass: Charlie Haden
Drums: Jack DeJohnette or Brian Blade-I can't decide.
Sax: Wayne Shorter
Trumpet: Roy Hargrove
Guitar: Kenny Burrell

I'd mainly be interested to see how all of these guys would interact.

With keys, I think Herbie would work the best with everyone else-yet I think putting Keith Jarrett with guys outside the typical ECM vibe would be hip or a train wreck.

Charlie Haden would be the cat on bass. I thought about Ron Carter and I thought about one of the younger guys, but since Ray Brown & Sam Jones are dead-it'd have to be Charlie.

Jack would be the 'safe' bet for drums, but I really like Brian Blade. I was lucky enough to meet him after the Wayne Shorter Concert here at Symphony Center on June 6th. I was walking down Adams going to my bus and I saw this guy walking down Adams w/a cymbal vault thing and a 'fro. I ran up to him and we talked for a few minutes. The nicest cat I've ever met yet he's a total monster on the set.

Wayne on Sax because he can take it to the world beyond at the drop of a hat, yet cut his teeth on bop-thinking of his 'Adam's Apple' CD.

Roy Hargrove-his latest CD 'Earfood' was great. It reminded me of Canonnball's 'Mercy Mercy Mercy At the Club' CD.

Kenny Burrell-his 'Midnight Blue' album rarely leaves my iPod. My trio did 'Chitlins Con Carne' on our debut concert at The Green Mill.

For an electric based group I'd go with....

Keys: Chick Corea
Bass: Richard Bona
Drums: Lenny White
Sax: Joshua Redman
Trumpet: Freddie Hubbard
Guitar: Pat Metheny or John McLean

Chick-if I'm not using Herbie, it's gotta be Chick.

Richard Bona-I like his playing-his solo stuff is great, his work with Metheny is astounding, and I feel like he'd be able to wear many hats during the evening.

Lenny White-I've heard him with RTF (I think) and with Jaco.

John McLean is a local guy-the first time I played at the Green Mill it was in his school group. I like his playing a bit more than Metheny's and that man is just a beast all around while being a great teacher and a nice guy. I looked forward to going to Guitar Ensemble because I was guaranteed to learn a ton.

Note: I've had a few beers tonight-if this doesn't make sense, I'll probably edit it sometime on Sunday.
