Here are some I think are great...

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
...
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

Everybody knows - Leonard Cohen

When the sleigh is heavy
And the timber wolves are getting bold
You look at your companions
And test the water of their
friendship with your toe
And they significantly edge
Closer to the gold
Each man has his price Bob
And yours was pretty low.....

Too Much Rope - Roger Waters

When they overrun the defences
A minor invasion put down to expenses
Will you go down to the airport lounge
Will you accept your second class status
A nation of waitresses and waiters
Will you mix their martinis
Will you stand still for it
Or will you take to the hills

Home - Roger Waters

She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal...

She was like so many more from that time on,
Their lives were all so empty,
Till they'd found their chosen one,
And their legs were often open,
But their minds always closed,
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains.

"Khe Sahn" Cold Chisel

I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing

Oooooh, too many to list, so let's pick one of the faves at random...

There's a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to from our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever of the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons shadowing my dreams

The Mississippi's mighty, but it starts in Minnesota
At a place where you can walk across with five steps down
And I guess that's how you started like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me and I start to drown

There's not enough room in this world for my pain
Signals crossed and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits I need you the most
I'm in love with your ghost

Dark and dangerous like a secret it gets whispered in a hush
And when I wake the things I dreamt about you last night make me blush
When you kiss me like a lover and you sting me like a viper
I go follow to the river play your memory like the piper

And I feel it like a sickness how this love is killing me
But I would walk into the fingers of your fire willingly
And dance the edge of sanity I've never been this close
In love with your ghost

Unknowing captor you'll never know how much you
Pierce my spirit but I can't touch you
Can you hear it a cry to be free
Oh I'm forever under lock and key
As you pass through me

Now I see your face before me; I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island as the sand beneath me slips
I burn up in your presence and I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles with you always at my heels

My bitter pill to swallow is the silence that I keep
It poisons me I can't swim free the river is too deep
Though I'm baptized by your touch I am no worse at most
In love with your ghost

One lyric that always stands out to me as amazingly expressive is this -

"You come to me like wine comes to a mouth
grown tired of water all the time"

Dave Matthews, "Two Step"

"They say that money can't buy love in this world
But it'll get you a half-pound of cocaine and a sixteen-year old girl
And a great big long limousine on a hot September night
Now that may not be love - but it's allright."

- Randy Newman

There are too many Rush lines to even think of posting here.

Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree.

Among others. There are lots of awesome things out there.

t's a jungle out there
Disorder and confusion everywhere
No one seems to care
Well I do
Hey, who's in charge here?
It's a jungle out there
Poison in the very air we breathe
Do you know what's in the water that you drink?
Well I do, and it's amazing
People think I'm crazy, 'cause I worry all the time
If you paid attention, you'd be worried too
You better pay attention
Or this world we love so much might just kill you
I could be wrong now, but I don't think so!
'Cause there's a jungle out there.
It's a jungle out there.

"It's A Jungle Out There" - Randy Newman

I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, and they're amazing lyricists, so...

"And all you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be..." -Breathe

"Strangers passing in the street, by chance two seperate glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me..." -Echoes

"You raise the blade, you make the change, you rearrange me till I'm sane" and "If your head explodes with dark foreboding too, Ill see you on the dark side of the moon." -Brain Damage

Other bands...

"Running down a dream, never would've come to me, working on a mystery, going wherever it leads, yeah Running down a dream." -Running Down a Dream (Tom Petty)

"Round and about the lake, mountains come out of the sky and they stand there."
-Roundabout (Yes)

"Just a puppet on a lonely string; who would ever wanna be king?"-Viva la Vida (Coldplay)

And on a lighter note:

"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow." -Yellow Snow
(Frank Zappa)

So, so you think you can tell,
Heaven from hell?
Blue sky from pain?
Can you tell the green fields
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade,
Your heroes for ghost?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a leaf rolled in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year.
Running over the same old ground and how we found the same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

"On the bottom words are shallow
On the surface talk is cheap
You can only judge the distance by the company you keep"

---- Joe Walsh, The Confessor

If I can teach this to my kids, I will consider my parenting a success.

"In your head is the answer let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor and the beat of your song"

---- Neil Peart, RUSH, Something for Nothing

My favorite Rush song.

You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

Another I just remembered--

"Goin' down the river, what do you think I see? I see a band of angels and they're comin' after me. Ain't no grave can hold my body down." Johnny Cash, man.

The first 4 lines of Burning Witch's "Stillborn":

Like a newborn child
Coming in from the cold
Take him in and wrap him up now
Then I will disappear to you
(would list the rest but half of it is indecipherable screams that sound orgasmic)

Sleeps Dopesmoker:

Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow the Smoke toward the Riff filled Land
Drop…out of life with bong in hand
Follow the Smoke toward the Riff filled Land
Proceeds the Weedian – Nazareth
Proceeds the Weedian – Nazareth
Creedsmen roll out across the dying dawn
Sacred Israel Holy Mountain Zion
Sun beams down on to the Sandsea reigns
Caravan migrates through deep sandscape
Lungsmen unearth the creed of Hasheeshian
Procession of the Weed-Priests to cross the sands
Desert Legion Smoke-Covenant is complete
Herb bails retied on to backs of beasts
Arise arise arise - The Son of the God of Israel
Jordan River flows on evermore
Bathe in glow of sunlight’s beating rays
They feel so lost and burned through our days
Stoner caravan emerge from sandsea
Earthling inserts to chalice the green cutchie
Groundation soul finds trust upon smoking hose
Assembled creedsmen rises prayer-filled smoke
Raise up seer’s Holy Prophecy
Lets down on upon years of the sun now feeds
Seed of Eden fall on the [?]
Onward caravan prepare new bong
Weed-Priests [?] Smol-tent the right
Judgement soon come to Mankind
Green Herbsmen serve rightful king
Hemp seed caravan carries
The molten fire flowed up toward Zion
Flight of the Nazarene to seek the Cheribum
Rides out believer with the spliff aflame
Marijuanaut escapes earth to cultivate
Grow-Room is church temple of the new stoner breed
Chants Loud-Robed priest down on to the freedom seed
Burnt offering redeems – completes smoked deliverance
Caravans’ stoned deliverance
The caravan holds to Eastern Creed - Now smokes believer !
The Chronicle of the Sensimillian
Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow the smoke toward the riff-filled land
Drop out of life with bong in hand
Follow-the-smoke-Jerusalem

And Graves At Sea "Pariah":

Sovereign feminine wisdom
Equalize
Destroy to rebuild
Consummate
Gorgon sisterhood
Covenant of cursed seed
To bleed without
Pain or wound
In harmony
With tide and moon
Invoken the power of fertility
Cyclical
From womb to tomb
By the moon
Over land and sea
Beauty in sorrow
By the sun
Light a fire in the sky
Beauty is melancholy
This reverence of sacred beauty
Elicits a vile betrayal
Usurper of purity
(the sanctity/the banishment) of this form so frail
Awaken pariah into this solitude
Shrouded in a halo
Of spiraling serpentine
Towering black mountains
Devour the dying sun
Down into the depths
Of the forgotten abyss
The pale light of the waning moon
Clings to the hanging fog
A call echoes out
On cascading cliffs
And on the horizon
A lone silhouette
The traveller has come to ease my pain
My final vision
Shown in mirrored glass
The forgotten beauty
And the cold sting of perseus's blade
Barren horizon
Eclipsing sun
Internal isolation

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Masters Of War - Bob Dylan (the most scathing protest song ever)
