Any game tunes you guys like to slap, tap or groove out?
A couple of mine:
Song of Storms - LoZ OoT
Overworld Theme - LoZ
Kakariko Village - LoZ OoT
Doesn't have to be Mario or Zelda or any other "usual suspects", anything modern or old school is completely cool.

That had some killer rock riffage. |

Lots of it is really evil-sounding and it's interesting to figure out how the guy who wrote/programmed the music achieved that effect. There are some great, groovy bass lines in it too! I've always loved this soundtrack and I guess it has sort of influenced how I write rock music. http://www.ttlg.com/ss1/music/ |

Anyone who also like the music from the Final Fantasy games should check out The Black Mages -- Ueamatsu progressive metal band :P
Their rhythem section ROCKS too!

I also truly love Yasunori Mitsuda, particularly for his work on both the Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross soundtracks. Brilliant soundtracks.
I'm not sure who did the soundtrack for Earthbound, but I think it's pretty kickin'. Very funky at times, and very atmospheric at others.
All of the Donkey Kong Country games for the SNES also had really good music, too. Pretty much all of the Zelda games from Ocarina of Time and up have good soundtracks, too, particularly Twilight Princess.
But mostly, I've yet to find many games after the SNES-era that really has captivating, engrossing soundtracks. It seems like the music is just too supplementary these days instead of being truly memorable. But I don't play a lot of modern games, either, and usually not by myself, so I'm making a gross generalization here, I'm sure.
Oh, and thank you for that link SirCanealot. That's an awesome performance and I see that he's got others from that concert up, too. |

Also the music from the opening screens of Metroid Prime 1, simple but creepy and engrossing. http://youtube.com/watch?v=42u0KB6f5eU

As for more conventional "chiptune" composers, David Wise!
Brief resumé:
NES: Wizard and Warriors, Marble Madness, Cobra Triangle, Battletoads... the list goes on. Pretty much every Rare game on that system.
SNES: Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 (especially), and 3. |

The music is one of my favourite things about that series, especially since it fits the mood of the games so well. They wouldn't be nearly as scary/creepy if it weren't for Akira's scores.
