Who's your favourite drummer(s)? And why?
For me, growing up...
First was Neil Peart (Rush)...Mr. Precision and man the chops!
Next was Phil Earhart[sic] (Kansas)...Just an amazingly clean drum
Stewart Copeland (Police)...His cymbal work is the best
Jeff Porcaro (Toto/Studio Wonder)...The master of the 4/4 shuffle...(Life tragically cut short...KIDS don't do drugs. ok?)
Billy Cobham ....Man! What can you say about Billy but he's FAST and expressive.
Omar Hakim...this is probably the most musical drum cat I've ever heard...and chops to match...I just love listening to Omar...especially when he's playing with triple strokes (how does he DO that? )
And to round out my influence list (there are hundreds of others)...Dave Weckl...this guy is phenominal and he only keeps getting better.
Honorable mention...
Terry Bozzio
Rod Morgenstein
Jack DeJonette[sic]
Vinnie Coluita
Peter Erskine
Phil Collins
Tony Thompson

Jimmy Chamberlain (smashing pumpkins): His use of polyrythmic variations and especially the way he uses his hihat foot rather than his right hand to keep time like a jazz cat would do but in a rock setting is awesome.
Matt Cantthinkofhislastname (Soundgarden): His ability to make Kim Thayil's 13/8, 15/8, 7/4, etc time signatures seem normal absolutely intriqued me and made me start thinking "outside the box"
Dave Grohl (duh): He just had such power... it was inspiring.
AAANNNNNDDDDD......
John Bonham (big duh): Take everything from those guys, roll it into one big ball, light it on fire, hit yourself with a hammer, take the blood and the burnt remains and mix them together, and use the concoction to construct a statue of Odin and Zeus battling with broadswords... that's almost it.

Mike Clark for the Headhunters for his nasty pocket
Zigaboo Modeleste for what are IMO the most danceable grooves I've heard and for being such a BMF with a hi-hat/snare/bassdrum.
John Bonham's power behind the kit really hit a chord with me with Zep.
I've always really liked Yes' drummer for tying that whole thing down so well with simple patterns, and have a guiltly pleasure for Ringo's drumming |

Chris Haikus - Best understanding of "musical space" of any drummer I've ever heard.
Dale Crover - Boom!
Danny Carey - Saw him three times in '07, the Lateralus drum solo changed my life.
and last but not least:
Rodney Holmes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjH1Uc-t4ps&fmt=18. 'Nuff said. |

As for why, the solo he played during that show would be reason enough! But if you need another reason, check out Greg Howe's album Extraction. Victor Wooten is also on that album.

I'd love to jam with any of those guys. They can all bring it and I love all their individual styles. |

What I like about him is that while I've played with 'better(in several regards)' drummers, I've never communicated better w/another musician. I know what beat is going through his head right now. I don't need to look at him to know where he's going, & he totally listens to my critique- he even thanks me when I point out something he missed.

Billy Cobham was my all time favorite for years. Just love his snare drum!
Bill Bruford is a God of the drum. He does stuff that I just don't understand.
Jerry Gaskill is just too ****ing cool for school. I love the way he physically leans back away from the kit when he's doing stuff that requires a good deal of concentration.
And many many more.

Couple of my current favorites -- Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Great instincts.
Mike Bordin of Faith No More and Ozzie -- Best I have ever had the pleasure to play with. Extremely versatile and really quick hands. Solid groove.
