Your musical taste

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone else here experience that their musical taste comes in waves? Example; Half a year ago I basicly listened only to Pink Floyd. After that came a period of hiphop, 95% of the time only hiphop was played. Now I feel that I've kinda "heard the best of it" and I've moved on. The last few days I've been listening to Jazzfunk and metalcore mostly.

Anyone else experience this, I feel like a grashopper who flies from field to field, eats it down and then moves on...

I'm the same way. a few years ago, I was a huge DMB fan(had every CD). then I moved on to metal then to funk. Now I'm into blues and fusion, but I still listen to the other stuff.

Yeah, I tend to be a bit of a musical magpie. I have all kinds of different music, from hardcore to rap to jazz to soul to pop and everything in between.

I just find that I usually spend some time getting into an album, and then move onto something else.

Right now I'm in my Cypress Hill Phase. Sometimes I get so bored of rock that I listen to a different genre straight for a week or so. When I get back to Led Zeppelin and stuff like that, it's like I'm hearing it for the first time.

The only things I don't listen actively to are death metal, rap/hip hop, and country. Country bugs me because it's all about the words, and marketed to the lowest common denominator; most rap/hip hop is rip-a-lick repetetive crap with no integrity; and death metal doesn't appeal to me. Mostly I listen to talk radio (great lyrics, but the instruments are mixed too far back for my liking ) jazz, smoove jazz, classic rock, alt-rock, classical, and ragtime...

Most of the stuff I listen to is rock or metal related, but I do listen to stuff in waves. One week I may be in the mood for In Flames or Opeth, the next week I may only listen to Nirvana or Pink floyd.

And a related observation is that most bass players are comfortable playing a variety of genres. That's not the case with most guitar players. The lead players in my bands don't understand that I can be equally happy playing classic rock, jazz, Motown, blues, punk, polkas and even (GASP!) country. All that matters to me is (a) I'm playiing (b) the band - including me - is continuing to improve, get more musical, play more difficult music, etc.

Right now I am really into Atreyu, Marilyn Manson (especially), Avenged Sevenfold, Lacuna Coil, Jamiroquai, Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Demon Hunter, In Flames, and many more along those lines. 2 months ago I was really into Coldplay, Pink Floyd, and Rush.

I listen to everything except pop. Just so happens that I cant stand it. So that pretty much means very little to no radio.

Currently spinning:

Afroskull (Monster for the masses)

Mike Watt (Ballhog or tugboat)

Jimi Hendrix (live in the west). This was converted from an old Lp to wave file bye a friend of mine.

I'm in the middle of a twee/psychadelia kick. Before that, I was trying to get my hands on every obscure Factory Records band ever, Crispy Ambulance, Section 25, Young Marble Giants (close enough). Before that, I only listened to 80's hardcore/crust. I kind of feel like getting more into death metal right now.

I guess my musical taste fluctuates between melodic and brutal on 3 month cycle.

Yeah, mince comes and goes... I have CDs I don't listen to for months and then all of a sudden I put them on everyday.

Musicalwise, when it comes to listening I'm tending to stabilize around Funk, Pop-Rock and Jazz... from a playing standpoint I'm trying Funk and Jazz and I like them... but just at early stages... like a quote in a TBer (sorry don't recall the nick) "life is a journey, bring an open mind"... and I'd add also open ears...

Enjoy, Paolo

I listen to a wide variety of stuff, o flate, it's been Percy Jones, Jello Biafra (spoken word), Material/Bill Laswell, odd classical pieces.

The only things I avoid like the plague are:

RAP
Death Metal
Broadway Show Tunes
Top-40
Crossover Pop Country

Most everything else is fair game for me in varying amounts
