Sign in to disble this ad
just as the title says you are playing your first huge crowd (over 1000 in this case) if you had to pick a song (as a cover or tribute) to start off the show what one would you pick and why? lets get a good discussion going here

Depends on the band and type of music....but if it was a rock band, MC5's "Kick Out The Jams" is a hell of a way to start.

that would be a good way to kick it off

personally id still go with let there be rock by AC/DC for several reasons.
1 its not to hard to play so its easier to work with if you get stage fright and its long so u have time to adjust, and 2 its an amazing song and if u have a guitar player who can play it right it would surely get the crowd going

From our list I think I'd go with "Stuck in the Middle". It's one of my favorites to play. We rock it a bit harder than the original and it's a hugely popular song, at least around where we play.

We would probably do either Rock and Roll Band by Boston, or Dont Stop Believing by Journey. Now, if it were just up to me (=) I would do the entire 2112 suite.

How to cure stage fright:
1: Make a point to not rehearse for at least one month before the gig.
2: When you practice by yourself make a point to play no real music just run scales and arpeggios.
3: Have no planed set lists.
4: Bring in at least one high profile and experienced musician that you have never met to sit in for the second set.
5: Eat a well balanced breakfast and smoke pot before show.
6: Profit!

The surprising crowd pleaser for us has been "Summer of '69". People love that song. It's easy and fun to play. And when there is a large crowd, there is nothing better than hearing them sing along, and everyone knows the words to that song.

"Twist and Shout" has been great for us. I mean, everyone knows it and everyone loves it, but as soon as we crank out the first few bars it's like being at a middle school dance when the DJ plays the hottest song out at the time. People just GOTTA move that song!

with my band (which is a mainly original one) Our song "Only Human", a great, upbeat opener.

but if I were in a cover band, and I was NOT singing (bass voice), it would be "Going for the One" by Yes, or "Whole Lotta' Love" by Led Zeppelin

However, If I could get away with this, it would happen. no contest.

If I was doing early metal, paranoid, a very well known opening riff, and the song is quite easy.

Depends on the mood...but for me

"Unyielding Conditioning" by Fishbone
"Kick Out the Jams" was suggested and I'm on board with that!
or
"September" by Earth Wind & Fire

I hate to say it but, if I heard 'Twist and Shout' or 'Don't Stop Believing', one or more these events would happen:

1.) Check ticket stub for refunds
2.) Find nearest beer tent and give them my savings account number
3.) Start making loud and annoying gestures to embarass wife to the point of leaving.
4.) Attempt to trip old people and/or children who walk by

How about:
'Testify' by SRV
'51st Anniversary' by Jimi
'Killin' in the name of' by Rage
'My lovely man' by RHCP

You guys make me laugh

If the list depicts a night of mellow groovin', I'd go for Chicago's version of I'm A Man.
If it's a full night of crankin' jams, Stevie Ray Vaughn's Tightrope, or perhaps Boston's Smokin'.
