Youtube videos

There's obviously a LOT of people who upload videos of themselves playing/singing/dancing and all that. I always sort of thought it was quite egotistical and never really understood it until recently when one of my friends has been offered a tour with a (small but) signed band just on the strength of a video of himself singing he'd uploaded on youtube.

I was wondering how many people on TB upload videos of themselves in their bedroom playing and if anybody else on here had managed to get themselves work by doing so?

Am I missing a trick here or is it something else completely that I don't get??

I've started to upload a few bit's, the idea was just as a little tutorial for hand positions, fretting and right hand tech for those particular tunes (well, my 'take' on them as best I can suss them out) for anyone who may like to learn them. The vid's are about the hands though, not me, but as a little promo tool to encourage new student's, or even a little audition for work for someone to check out, I think it's handy.

I understand the teaching side of it, I think the internet's a really good tool for learning more about playing an instrument. Maybe its just me, I haven't really jumped on the facebook/twitter bandwagon either, I must be a young fogey haha

No it's not just you

TB and a bit of Youtube are the only things I do, none of the rest appeal that much, horses for courses.

I did hear that Journey's replacement for Steve Perry was picked up on from a vid. It's nice to point someone in the direction of something to hear and see, depends how you promote/use it for yourself too I suppose, it's out in the open, if someone is looking they have a good representation of your 'thang' to check out, that's got to be a good thing.

So far I've only done one video, a cover of Rush's Open Secrets, and I really did it just for fun. I'll be doing more in the future. I'm not a big fan of nailing things note-for-note, so long as you've got the feel of the artist down.

I'm just a hobbyist, but between my pedal demos and songs I've made, I've gotten close to 600,000 views on YouTube. Since I like to play in front of people but can't gig, it's certainly an alternative way to get seen.
