1. Because "bass" doesn't remotely rhyme with "Mars" or "far."

2. Because it also doesn't scan, rhythm-wise.

3. Because David Bowie didn't play bass, he wasn't weird enough.

4 Another example of anti-bass bias?

I may be out in right field but I always thought Ziggy was loosely based on Jimi Hendrix.

Hence the left handed guitar.

Just a thought.

Ziggy stardust, "alter ego" of david bowie somewhere around the seventies... he had this album out called "the rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars"... i suppose you must be really young not to have ever heard about ziggy stardust!!! it's a great album in my opinion.. i'm a big bowie fan. when the album was out, and on tour, bowie was supposed to be ziggy and his band were the spiders from mars. and then ziggy was killed by his fans i think...
I suppose he played it left hand in reference to jimi hendrix... cause ziggy was supposed to be this great guitar player and front man. and since it's the story of a front man, its most common for frontmen to play guitar than to play bass i guess...
