Just because a bassline is simple doesn't mean that it's not a killer bassline. Some of the greatest and most recognizable lines are really simple. Pink Floyd's Money, Queen's Another One Bites the Dust, and Ozzy's No More Tears come to mind.

I have found that, for me, simple basslines work the best. Not because I can't handle more complex lines but because I can feel the groove better. Why over play when you don't have to?

Bassist like Dusty Hill, Cliff Williams (AC/DC), Stu Cook (CCR), Gene Simmons (KISS), Ian Hill (Judas Priest), Tim Commerford (RATM, Audioslave), etc... they all keep it pretty simple and it works.

If you want to get them up on the dance floor, play ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man. That repetitive quarter note bass line just gets people dancing.

Now when we played it the bass was way more out in front than in the original.

If you listen to ZZ Top's La Grange, I think you'll find that the main thing that makes that tune work, at least during the verse, is the tension of the syncopated guitar part played against the straight bassline. Very simple. Very effective...

Agreed. When the guitar is playing that part, I always played straight. When the guitar started soloing I would play the syncopated part.

Straight in this case is a straight eigths rhythm. The bass plays two notes per beat, every beat.

Syncopation is when you accent off beats. For example, most rock accents the 1 and 3 beats. Accenting the 2 and 4 is simplest form of syncopation.

In the La Grange example the guitar accents the 1 but then accents the second part of the beat rather than the beat itself. Gives it a very driving beat.

I am sure somebody will explain it better.

I don't know just me but I wouldn't put Money on that list.

Dusty Hill is a bad dude! He can sing, sing high, he can double a tough lick w/Billy, or keep it simple and pound it home. I've seen him described as ZZ Top's "secret weapon".
