Another fine singer

I don't expect many of you to have heard Jeri Southern

This record floored Sinatra.
Check out the pitch, clarity, and freshness, and respect of the composer's work..

She drove record producers nuts because she insisted on playing piano herself while singing.

She had been gigging on piano in Chicago in her 20's even backed Anita O'Day a few times.
After less than 10 years as a singer, she just up and quit singing.

Unfortunately, not all of her best is on You Tube.

That Ole Devil Called Love

This is a masterpiece! Great tune. Phrasing. I listen to this over and over. Check this out. (It sounds like Russell Procope on alto. Just a guess.) I love the way she sings, "and those rocks in my heart." Right before the bridge. Priceless.

I am probably the only person at TalkBass, other than you, to have been in Chipping Norton.

Ha. Aspirin was invented/discovered in Chippy - how appropriate. Keith Moon (the Who) owned a hotel in the town. 15 miles up the road is Tom Martin who builds wonderful basses. And that is about it. Any TBers planning a trip to the Cotswolds are welcome to PM me and drop in to this lovely part of the world. (especially those from NJ!)
