Anthony Jackson on Steve Gadd

I thought some of you folks might find this interview interesting from the bassist's perspective.

Amen. Sounds a lot like Jackson is describing a "virtuoso accompanist", which I find one of the highest ideals to aspire to.

Thanks alot for that. Steve Gadd has long been one of my favorite drummers deserving of any accolade given. As a bass player, I've always dreamed of being in a rhythm section with him. Alas, I don't think he does weddings!!

I love Anthony Jackson... I was always under the impression that he played only with a pick. But when I was in Japan, I saw a live vid of him with Lee Ritenour, playing fingerstyle. Is that a recent development?

No, as far as I know he has always also played finger-style. I have a DVD of him playing with Grover Washington Jr., Eric Gale, Richard Tee, Ralph MacDonald, and Steve Gadd from the early eighties and he plays finger style. He also has a right hand muting technique where he puts the outside edge of his right hand across the strings at the bridge and plucks with his thumb. He plays some pretty amazing passages in that DVD with Ritenour, (called Overtime, if I'm thinking of the same one), and also puts in a great performance on Calle 54 with Michel Camilo and Horatio "El Negro" Hernandez.

When it comes to bass guitar, nobody does it better than Anthony Jackson. I have an article from a drumming magazine that talks to him about drummers, and he talks about Steve G., Buddy Rich, Vinny C., and other great drummers he loves to play with. I'll post it if I can find it.

Jim

I remember Chick saying that Steve Gadd was possibly the greatest musician that he'd ever worked with.

He is known for his pick playing mainly because of pick and flange bassline from 'For The Love O' Money' by the O Jays. He was only 18 or something when he came up with that...bastard. There is also a track on 'The Wiz' soundtrack that sounds very very similar.

Please tell me he also played with a pick on "Nite Sprite" from Chick Corea's "The Leprechaun".
