Arranging horn voicings underneath double bass melody?

Hi all,

I'm just after some advice as to how one would go about arranging horn chord voicings while double bass plays a tune's melody. Will it distract from the melody if the chord voicings contain notes higher than the melody note? I've been told that this is something to avoid, however, given the bass' register this seems like it would be impossible without turning the music into low-register mush. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as would any listening suggestions.

Cheers!

It's perfectly fine to have the horns above the bass melody. In fact, it's often better to have the horns quite a bit higher, rather than in a similar range. That way they do not obscure the bass. The important thing is not to cover up the bass melody. Dynamics, voicings, and melodic considerations all play into this.

As far as recordings, I can't think of any good jazz examples off hand (which I'm guessing is what you are asking about), but check out any classical piece for double bass and orchestra. The violins are rarely, if ever, playing below the bass. Or check out bass (voice) arias from operas--same thing. See how they manage to have all these high instruments playing while still allowing the bass to be clearly heard as the melody.
